On the way back from a 71mile cycling along the Basingstoke canal I could make a small diversion and see if there were any red flags flying today. There werent, so I took my chance to bag this Trig. I have tried a couple of times before when going along this canal but havent managed it until now. I just followed the road, then track, then path up the hill through the gate and along another track until I came across it. It helps that it is painted white. Nice views of the heath but not much else as the hill is very flat.

Red flags up Friday afternoon at 1.30pm. Enquired at Keogh barracks to SW and security guard kindly phoned the Captain who said the flags would be down around 5pm. However, they were down by 4pm. During firing, gates locked from 7.45am until firing stops

7th and indisputably the best of the day. Parked at access point to North - wasn't immediately sure which one! - crossed railway on bridge and followed tracks SE and then SW to trig. White paint, concrete plug, views across the blasted heath to the North Downs in a bit of late afternoon sunlight. Stunted trees, and heather will be fabulous later in the year. But no birds or bird song thanks to the army!

Tried for this in the afternoon but flags up and firing on ranges clearly heard so declined. Returned in the evening. Parked roadside due north, near Tunnel Hill. Heathland tracks most of the way, then over short heather to trig. Pillar found with reasonable coat of white paint; some chipping to top edges; removed black bodge tape from around the pillar and a lot of army paraphernalia tied to the top. Cap missing, asphalt plug; RHD side sight hole open. Some good distant views to be had, suspect London was in the frame as well as Guildford, Hogs Back, Woking etc.

I think this is the 5th time of trying for this one as have been turned back by the red flags on previous occasions - Parked to North West then over ranges to Pillar - good condition with chemical lamp? still tied to loops - wide views - loved it. Extra point as last Pillar in Surrey :)

Wall to wall blue sky so an opportunity to address the New Year excesses. Lunch at the Royal Oak in Pirbright followed by circular walk round the ranges. Trig has asphalt plug and W sight hole open but otherwise in exc condition. Today wearing a large plywood sign saying CAS and numerous plastic tubes (Old Man thinks these are night lights of some form). Panoramic views and wide open skies - amazing peaceful and open area in the middle of England's most densely populated county.

We assumed the flags wouldn't be flying today and they weren't. We parked at Tunnel Hill to the north and took the track in from there. There were quite a few people about and plenty of evidence of horseriders on the tracks so perhaps the flags are down most of the time. The trig had some strange plastic tubes filled with red and yellow liquid tied to the holding down lugs - possibly something military. Once painted white, tarmac plug.
