As I was in London for the day, it made sense to go and bag this one. I took the ‘tube’ from St Pancras to Walthamstow Central and then an over-ground train to Chingford. From there, it was an easy stroll up Connaught Road and a short climb up the hill to the pillar. The sun was shining and the sky was clear but it was very cold and there was a heavy frost on the ground. Apart from the missing centre plug, the pillar is in good condition and located very close to another monument, erected in 1824 and placed on the (then) Greenwich Meridian. The WGS84 ‘meridian’ is a short distance off to the east. There is also a second plaque commemorating T.E. Lawrence (Shaw)... ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. The views are mostly obscured by woodland but it’s not an unpleasant location, albeit very popular with dog-walkers.
