Good condition pillar in hedge line. Parked at the gate. FB faces east-ish with all sightholes open and clear. Bit of wood obscures the bolt though. Nice views. No cap or plug.

Parking is a problem in this area. Quiet so stopped in front of gate opposite Newbigging Farm, over gate and couple of minutes walk up field boundary. Car in sight the whole time so if farmer arrived I could move the car quickly. Fence jump to check flush bracket.(watch out for uneven stoney surface round trig.)

Car straight ahead blocking gate!

My earliest-in-the-day pillar, visited after delivering loved ones to Edinburgh Airport. From Newbigging road, over farm-gate, through dewy grass, past some inquisitive ruminating cows, to easily reach this pillar which has open cap and all sight-holes open.

Third visit. For GPS reading and updated photographs. SITE VISIT: Nearest safe parking on back road is 550m west by Newbigging Craig at NT064731 in widened stretch beside field gate on south side of road. Walked the 550m back along road until reaching gate by west side of N/S fenceline which leads to trig. Pillar located to east of fenceline hedge and an easy crossing is incorporated into the new replacement fence. Column in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces east ~85. All sight holes open, innards filled with debris. Full 360 open outlook includes Arthurs Seat and the Pentland Hills.

This pillar is on the western edge of an arable field which is surrounded by a 3 course barbed wire fence. Easiest access is from the unclassified road to the north, via the edge of the adjacent field (west) head south over the former railway track then there is a gate between the fields in the dip. Over the gate and follow the field edge to the trig. Original visit 1985. Revisited and photographed 13/04/03, GRP.
