Convenient little car park at Middlesmoor. Easy navigation up the rough road and Nidderdale Way. Pillar located on north side of wire fence overlooking grouse moors. Chunks of cement missing from top of this trig. Spider plug intact. Flush bracket faces SE. Shame about the low cloud. On a clear day this would provide wonderful panoramic views.

Day 12 of 14: A Pennine Way East Walk. From Aysgarth via Walden, Coverdale, Dead Man's Hill, Scar House Res. Access isn't easy, the grouse men and stone walls make it so. Wow we must nearly be home. No damage was done and once over the wall the number of triggers paths tells it's own tale. Blood shed, for the trig, for the walk. This is the Rain Stang, damaged sentinel watching over all Nidderdale and perhaps all of us too.

Lancaster Castle to York Minster Walk (Day 5 Kettlewell to Middlesmoor).An epic squelchy walk over from Tor Dyke (akin to bog snorkeling) followed by a steep climb up from Scar House Dam. The pillar is set on a heathery moor on a quick detour off the byway.Good views on a wild blustery day PS The word stang means long pole or stake. PPS The signpost says byway open to all traffic! You could wreck your car taking that advice.

Parked in the Middlesmoor car park, and walked up the track; through the gate and followed the sheep trod through the heather and scrub right to the trig. Pillar commands a magnificent spot with wonderful views, but the top is significantly damaged. The spider looks particularly vulnerable. Returned to the track via the same route.

20 mile circular walk from Lofthouse, this trigpoint is just off Moor Lane (Nidderdale Way). Due to low cloud there were no views. Slight damage to the top of the trigpoint

Walked from CP near Scar Ho. Resvr. SE along good track then NE to trig with is damaged corners. Good, mostly spacious 360 deg views. Returned via Hump top (point 459) then quarry.

I walked up from middlesmoor after arriving on the 825 Dales bus from Pateley Bridge.Easy walk up Bridle Way to a new wooden gate at SE 08055 75534,then straight up to pillar.I even had time for a nice cold pint of Aspall Cider at the Crown before bus back. Earby/Skipton/Grassington/Pateley Bridge/Middlesmoor & back all on a £10 Day Tripper Dales Rover ticket another bargain day out.

Usual walk in from middlesmoor village just off track best views of day top damaged cap plug sun going down,was talking to a local gamekeeper on way back he reconed that nidderdale is the secret valley of the dales and the locals hardly see any walkers at all!

From Woodale Moss (459m) SE076761 there are 2 posts to the south east and then in the corner of the field there is a new style over the wall. Saves jumping over fences etc. Trig appears to have been hacked on top by farm machinery. Great views. Good walk from either Middlesmoor or the Scar House Reservoir where there is lots of parking.The reservoir has some of the best industrial archeology in the country and is impressive engineering.

Parked the Motorcycle about a mile away from the pillar ! closest i could get with my Yamaha XJR 1300. Then walked to the pillar. Then called in at nearby pub for refreshment.

The Triangulation Pillar Walked 1 mile from where i left the bike to get to the pillar.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 8th September 1953 costing £21.3s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE38/T75 in 1955. Levelled for height also in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in May 1975. SITE VISIT: Approached from southeast. Free public car park on NE side of road at SE091743. Straightforward climb from Middlesmoor. Mostly track. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces south, ~173°. Vented through west sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view.

A half-hour walk up the public track from Middlesmoor and from there just a ten minute walk up the wall back on to the moor top and the Trig. Use the gate well before you get to the wall rather than trying to get over high unstable walls. Top of trig is crumbling away but retains original plug. Good views of upper Nidderdale.

Visible and accessible. I came up In Moor Lane from Scar House Reservoir and then hopped over the wall [wire topped] and followed the wall up to the trig which had been visible from the lane. Returned by crossing fence near pillar and dropped down to gateway with broken gate - this would have been an easier access point if coming up from Middlesmoor. Good views of the surrounding areas. Some slight damage to the top corners. Still has original plug with indented lettering.

Stunning views, if it wasn't sleeting. Can get to it directly up if you wiggle through sheep hole in wall. Aviod deep heather on way up field.

Pillar on N side of fence/broken wall. Plug intact but top damaged with end of spider exposed. Sighting-hole on W side open, rest closed. Good views across to Great/Little Whernside, Meugher and down Nidderdale. The OS 1:25000 (Explorer 26) map shows two locations on the moor to the SW of How Stean Gorge labelled 'pillar' - I assumed these are waterworks-related and didn't investigate.

easy to get to from the Bway, IF you go through the gate off the bway bfore you really need to otherwise a direct route over the walls is a tricky proposition. beautiful june evening. no time for a pint at middlesmoor unfortunately.

I am surprised no-one has visited here before; it is quite east to get to, being near a bridleway from which it is mostly hidden. Nice views over towards Great Whernside and down the Nidd Valley. Ended up camping a short distance from the pillar for the night. There is some slight damage to the top of the pillar.
