Parked on the track and took a steady walk up, very wet and muddy, until the stone steps on the right. Headed up through the heather which was muddy and wet and soon spotted the trig in the mist. No far reaching views today sadly, like the dragon.

Initially pulled over on road to north west of the hill at a lay-by where there was a stile over the fence into to moorland, however there was no obvious path through the heather. Continued north east along the road for another third of a mile then turned south onto a track which headed uphill, past a couple of houses on west of track. Ok road surface to begin with but quite broken up after first hundred metres. Continued to clump of pine trees and pulled over. Could possibly have continued a bit further south if you had an off road bike or vehicle. On foot headed for higher ground. After about three hundred metres nearing a clump of trees is a footpath veering south west up a few steps. Footpath runs to west of trees and continues to gain height. Pillar comes into view a little further on, there’s a word path from the east side. Spider plugged. Great views. A small curved dry stone wall has been built just to north of the pillar. (A dragon evidently.) Weathered whitewash.

For me this was the best visit of the day. I approached via a PROW with farm meadows etc. The panoramic views from the site of the pillar are fantastic and we're enhanced by a very friendly looking dragon that had been fashioned from pieces of local stone. The pillar was in good condition albeit the original centre for the spider has been replaced with some sort of composite material.

My turn to lead a Staffs Moorlands walk, this one titled 'A Dip by the Pool'. I picked John up on the way through to Hulme End. I'd ventured out a bit earlier on the pretence on having a cuppa and bite to eat in the splendid Tea Junction at our start point. John had other ideas. An IT emergency that he needed some help with. A bit of a think and some luck on my part and a solution reached. The journey was uneventful and there were already a few familiar faces at start location and in the tea rooms, too. I'd reccied the walk the Sunday before and had to make alterations to the route to avoid a fair number of fields with cows and calves. I was also mindful of the weather forecast, now far improved from earlier in the week, but pretty definite that rain would be coming in around 3.30pm. 23 in attendance and I explained to the group that I hoped to be back at 3pm. So it was shirt sleeve order as we set off in the direction of the hamlet of Brund, crossing the River Manifold on our way there just by Buttsend! We passed through Brund, but if you're ever in the area to old corn mill is worth closer inspection, well a nosey as it's a private house now. Just north of Brund we took a quick break by the meandering Manifold, then onto Pool, where we struck westwards in the general direction of Reapsmoor, the highlight of this leg for me was seeing a benchmark on a building! Sad by true. The Butchers Arms was open so we took the opportunity to have lunch . The landlord, Carl, was, as always welcoming and suggested eating our sandwiches whilst having a drink in the pub. One of the four fires in the pub was alight, and Carl showed me a copy of the record of an inquisition (we'd call it an inquiry) held at the pub after the body of a man was found on the moors. The names of the jury were shown, many being local surnames. After our lunch stop it was up towards the trig point at Revidge. Fantastic views and the heather was in bloom. One of the local rangers, Andy, was by the trig testing 3 prospective volunteer rangers on navigation. We apologised for disturbing them but stayed to enjoy the views and scent of the heather. With the cloud thickening we set off back to our start point, off the moors via Clough Head, past Warslow Hall onto Cowlow and then picking up the Manifold Way for a short distance to the car park. Just short of the end there was a geocache, that Kirsteen found following my precision instructions! The timing of the walk was good as by the time a good portion of us had changed out of our boots and walked to the nearby Manifold Inn the rain had started. A good chat in the pub was lengthened by the intensity of the rain outside! There are lots of pictures on Staffordshire Moorland Walks facebook page, if you want a nosey.

I was looking forward to this, lots of sunshine forecast after so, so, very long in the rain and cloud. Parked at the Greyhound, so the afters look like they have been sorted. But heading north it was minutes before the path was lost. Repeat time and time again. This is a strange valley. Lots and lots of footpaths marked - so none very much used. An amazing number of buildings, in use and derelict, which left us non GPS people confused. And underfoot? Cattle riddled bog. No fun. Still once the ridge is achieved, at the north, things turned for the better. Pleasant top. Not THAT great. And the Greyhound of course. Worth the wait for that 5:00pm openning.

Despite this unfortunate trig being being located in Staffordshire, I need it to get all those on sheet 119. Drove up the lane from the north towards Hayes, about 200m after the tarmac runs out there is a good sized parking area. Followed track south for 500m until just before copse of trees, a track on the right heads round the moor edge past recently burnt gorse to the pillar.

Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. Peak District National Park. Approaching from north, on track from Cuckoostones, walk up to small wood & then take path up onto vast heathland. No need to wade into heather, as path then leads straight to prominent white pillar, where 2 more access paths also come in from other directions. Impressive spot.
