Weather was fine but cold and snow now. Logged with the android app. Parked in Trorpe and walked into Dove Dale – wasn’t planning to climb Thorpe Cloud but it looked inviting and had to be done – great to be free of the weekend crowds – I had Dove Dale to myself. Climbed out of the Dale at Loves Leap and walked on the paths above Reynards Cave and just below the trigpoint – thought about cutting across but continued with my planned walk down into Dove Holes and up past The Nabs to Bostern Grange Farm. Made and excursion off the path to the pillar through and open gate and a copse climbing one fence. Returned down Gag Lane.

A joint visit with Carole. We parked at the start of the footpath to the east on Gag Lane. Initially using the footpath/track but left it to go through gateways and belt of woodland to enter the large field in which we thought the pillar was. Unfortunately it is on the western side of the wall so needed a wall and barbed wire crossing to reach it. Everything in good condition and still retains an original plug. Nice all round views from this vantage point.

A stiff climb out of Dovedale. There is a quiet path that skirts the top of the crags. Quite an adventure as it is not possible to drop back into Dovedale willynilly, well you can, but you will only do it once. Some "deviation from legality" is required for this, real Clem bagging here, and the constant presence of a quadbike was unnerving. Could not be seen against the sky so I know that the plug was there from feeling alone. Every thing in good shape, and I was rewarded by an easy and safe descent back into Dovedale and a fine walk through gathering winter gloom to Alstonefield. Dovedale at dusk is magical. A good 16 mile day.
