Parked near Bunnahabhain then down to bridge then easy walk to Sgarbh Breac then onward to Beinn Thrasda where we saw a white tailed eagle hanging around a dead sheep in a bog plus plenty of fit deer. Then onward towards Rhuvaal trig and then Rhuvall Lighthouse just as a ferry sailed by.

Fantastic location for a low lying pillar looking across the sound to the hills of Jura. Just outside the lighthouse garden a great spot for a leisurely lunch break and brilliant timing for an opportune photo as the weekly ferry to Colonsay passed by too whilst we were there.

Parked in a sort of carpark just before the final elbow in the road leading to Bunahabhain. Read a sign saying it was deer stalking season and should phone the gamekeeper to see if it was safe to proceed. As there were a couple of cars there already, we thought this might be likely. No phone signal here, so went down to the distillery to see if there was a payphone. The office had just opened, but they happily (and very kindly) made the call for us. A few calls later and still hadn't got hold of the gamekeeper. Other staff had arrived by this point, one of which partakes in stalking and he said they were most likely shooting at this part of the island as there was no signal. He advised it would be safe to carry on, if we stuck to the quad bike track, following the powerline. Off we went, following the landrover track in the wrong direction for over half a mile! Doh!! Backtracked and found the narrow track just before the powerline and a gate through the sheep pen construction(?) (N55 53.066 W006 07.858) into the carpark! Followed this quad bike track down to the river, then noticed a bridge a little further back (N55 53.123 W006 07.863). Crossed the bridge and followed the boggy track for a tough 4 mile walk to the lighthouse. Met the very nice and friendly gamekeeper about a quarter of the way along and he said we were in no danger. He also said there was a good chance of seeing a herd at the light house... which we did! Beautiful creatures that kept their eye on us until we got a bit too close for their comfort. Luckily it was also a lovely sunny day and the views of Jura were stunning.

Down from the "mountain" then the fabulous north coast caves, unexpected treat to get a 2nd trig (had packed the map away)

Peace and quiet, except for the dog yapping at the lighthouse Just a 4 mile "track" to splash through, beautiful views of the snow melting off Jura

On my fifth visit to the lighthouse at Rubh' a' Mhàil, I finally get to ake photos of the trigpoint! This is one of my favourite Islay walks - you've got it all, woodland, river, sea, moorland, mountain and views across to Jura - and a fantastic lighthouse to admire at the end of the walk. Saw Yellowhammer and had to watch where we put our feet as the Drinker Moth caterpillars were in abundance.

One of my favourite Islay walks. Have only visited trig once though when working with Springwatch last year and boss wanted to go long walk. Typical! The only day during the three weeks that it rained torrentially and howled a gale. We got soaked but enjoyed the experience. Didn't bother taking camera so will take it on next trip!
