Been looking for an excuse to visit Richmond since before lockdown. Today, the stars aligned: a gig in Vauxhall requiring a trip on the Reading to Waterloo line, which goes via... yep, you guessed it. This trig gets a lot of passing traffic, so I was surprised to be left completely alone as I took my usual photos. No views from the pillar, but some superb ones from the hillside terrace on the way up. Possibly the poshest trig I've ever bagged. FB S7250 is attached to a building just outside the park gates, too.

Between 1992 and 2009 I either lived or worked a stones throw from Richmond Park, and must have walked, jogged, ran, cycled and driven past this Trig Point HUNDREDS of times without paying it the slightest notice. I would spend weekends driving up to Scotland and back again to bag a Munro or two, often with Trig Points on top of them, and never bothered to visit the Trig Point half a mile from where I was! So now, living close to the Scottish Border in North Northumberland, I drive all the way back down to Richmond to say with certainty “I’ve bagged the Trig Point in Richmond Park”. Seems idiotic, but actually feels immensely satisfying!

This is a beautiful green space. Pillar has plastic cap, and all four s/h's open. Then on to a rocking Craven Cottage to see Fulham win 2-0. Cycled past this one on several occasions without it registering! Nothing exceptional about it, but, about 100m away through a deer gate and into the gardens of Pembroke Lodge, is Henry's Mound. This has one of a limited number of 'protected views' in the London area - this one of St Paul's Cathedral. It's a breathtaking sight, and well worth a look if you're at the TP.

Our first pillar in Greater London. Bagged after a visit to Twickenham Stoop to watch Harlequins play Bradford Bulls, (FT. 16-30). The pillar is in a rather secluded spot amongst the trees and a short walk from the car park. I spent some 10 minutes talking to an interested passer-by about the purpose and history of the pillar and the principles of triangulation, he seemed to be enlightened. Richmond Park is well worth a visit and the view from King Henrys Mount excellent. We were astonished to find a free, unvandalised telescope available.
