1st Trig of my 6 mile walk on a very windy cold day. I parked up at the height barrier car park on Back Lane near the junction with Padiham Rd. Headed East (dodging the several vehicles that zoomed past me on the 1.5 mile walk to the trig). The field is accessible via the stone stile, short detour off the PRoW to the pillar which is in a good location. Shame the Red and Blue paint has now faded. For such a grand name, I was a little deflated at the ordinariness of it. Next onto Black Hill.

Revisit whilst on BM hunt in the area, alighted the 06.15 M5 Burnley bus from Earby at Brierfield. On walk over to Clitheroe next via Sabden Fold & Spence Moor for the 14.09 280 Skipton bus back to Earby.

Last TP of a 3 trig day (Pendle Hill & Stang Top inc on the circular route). From Pendle Hill across Ogden Res's, used PROW heading SE to Sabden. Took a footpath heading SW towards Lower lane fm at Sabden Hall to avoid using road - mistake, footpaths seemed quite undefined and lack of markings. Eventually picked up PROW at the bottom of the ridge and headed East for the 5 bar metal gate at the top of the hill - TP just beyond the gate. Good view back across at Pendle Hill - took the ridge walk heading back to Ridgealing Res. We bumped into a very interesting chap who was paying an extraordinary amount of attention to the local road signs, he turned out to be the designer and pattern maker of the local Green parish signs in the area. Three TP circular approx. 20km

HISTORY: Pillar completed 24th June 1948 costing £14.8s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD74/T38 in 1948. Levelled for height in 1962. Last maintained by the OS in October 1980. SITE VISIT: Parked by field entrance in gateway on north side of unclassified road at SD816376. In planted field, grass? Chosen route taken with consideration. Pillar in good condition. Spider fitted with grey plastic disc by Jon Rouse, 2nd July 2000. Flush bracket faces south, ~173°. Vented through east and west sight holes, innards part filled with debris. Good open skyline apart from a 45° portion centred on south which is overtopped by trees beyond the road.

I was leading a walk for the Irregulars, LDWA and we just happened to be passing along the footpath near this pillar. So it had to be visited for five of us to log our visit - the other 17 just shrugged their shoulders and had their picture taken. Pillar in good condition apart from the replacement plastic plug. Nice area with good views particularly those towards Pendle Hill. Lovely autumnal day vor a visit too.
