We had just visited the exquisite Buckland-in-the-Moor Church (St Peter) and then proceeded up to the moor to climb a tor each: my lady chose Saddler Tor complete with four white Dartmoor ponies, whilst I naturally chose the trig-containing Rippon Tor. We waved to each other across the moor - what pathos! The pillar is enclosed within a round stone wall, and has slight damage to the top. It has an open cap and two sight-holes are open. It's difficult to imagine a better view in the locality compared with this at the top of Rippon Tor. Then off to the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh to see some steam engines. Such a good day: magnificent church building, a two-tor walk, and the Great Western Railway that was.

It had been raining steadily all morning but as I parked at Hemsworthy Gate (next to a police car), the cloud suddenly broke up, the sun came out and it stopped raining… result! There were other problems, though; the track up to the summit of the tor was looking like a small river with water cascading down, the ground to either side was more like a marsh and there was a group of cows, accompanied by a huge bull standing on the track. This was going to be the severest test yet of the waterproofness(?) of my new Lowa walking boots. As I approached the aforementioned bovines, it was obvious that they weren’t too happy about being moved off the track into the bog. Three options: give up and go back (no way), detour into the bog myself (not if I could help it) or face down the bull. In the end, the direct approach worked and with a lot of head shaking they reluctantly moved out of my way. The pillar is surrounded by a rough stone wall or shelter and isn’t easy to spot until you’re on top of it. I’ve seen pillars in better condition and this one shows signs of erosion and repair. The centre plug has been taken, of course! Considering the weather conditions, the views were excellent… And my feet stayed dry, another result!

Hard to spot initially as view blocked by surrounding stone shelter. Easy to find though on top of tor. Easy parking at Hemsworthy gate (where you will also find a surface block). Bagged at the end of a brilliant run with my (old)old man on a scorching day around the edge of that area of the moor - Top tor, pil tor, Tunhill rocks, hollow tor, Bonehill rocks, Bell tor, Cinkwell tor, honeybag tor, houndtor, greater rocks, Black hill, Haytor, Saddle tor and finally rippon tor!

On the run with Erme Harrier - not what my old bones would call scorching though! Fine setting on a lovely sunny day - the first of many for this summer? The trig is well protected by the surrounding rock shelter wall.

vgc, no cap or plug, spider apparently reset in new mortar at some point; a few old to sides repairs. Decent tor, trig in stone shelter: fine hill & view. Popular spot on a hot Sunday. Good track from NW. Jogged up and raced down, so as not too miss too much of the Classic Serial on R4.

The views over South Devon, South Hams and Dartmoor are spectacular. The East Devon coastline towards Dorset was also clearly visable. Take your binoculars !

The pillar, looking E, towards Teignmouth and Torbay. (Showing damage).
