I'll concur with my predecessor's 'more luck than judgment' comment. I can't offer much advice for other non-GPS-ers, either. Still, if you're going to be traipsing round a dense bit of woodland in search of a block of concrete, it may as well be this one because the wood is particularly pretty. Which is just as well, as you can't see anything else from the pillar. I actually stumbled across it surprisingly quickly (not my usual experience with woodland trigs!). Pillar in remarkably good condition if you ignore the angle it's leaning at.

On a slant. Not sure if this is deliberate attempt to dislodge or remove or natural movement of earth beneath. Access from road between Rake and Rogate, above a cycle track for mountain bikes. Trees and vegetation have grown up around it and it was more luck than judgement to locate it. Misty morning too so difficult to get bearings using just an OS map. The proper way.

I was intending to make a brief detour from walking the Serpent Trail to visit this trig but the mountain bike tracks were in use and I couldn't see an easy way up without getting in the way. Undeterred I tried again starting from the road to the south which turned out to be a much easier access route*. The trig is in generally good condition apart from a pronounced lean and still has its metal cap. * For those wishing to try the southern approach I suggest leaving the road via the access track to the west of the reservoir then turn right along the back of the reservoir past the mobile phone mast. Leave the track before it crosses under the power cables and use a GPS to guide you the last 100ish yards up to the trig.

There is a deer fence to be negotiated at top of the escarpment, but in poor state so not difficult. Then into a scrubby area of gorse and conifers. GPS needed to find this as weaving in and out of the trees with no views at all. Pillar found listing badly with shallow foundations exposed, hence classifying it 'Damaged'. Original cap in place, indented lettering; L, R and rear sight holes open.

Pillar has a spectacular list, probably due to a v shallow plinth, and animals burrowing the soft sand underneath (although I suspect man helped somewhere along the way, the mystery is why?). No views - surrounded by trees (complete with some good specimens of yellow stagshorn fungi) but good views along the N Downs from edge of trees to N. I parked on the road to the east together with a large number of off-road bikers. Having established that it would be safe for me to yse the 'Push Up Route' I made my way to the top of the hill. A convenient break in the wire fence then soon had me at the pillar. It is in the right position and in good condition except that at some time in the past it has been uprooted from the ground. Never moved but left at an angle. Still retains an original metal indented lettered plug. An interesting area to visit especial on such a good weather Good Friday which had attracted a multitude of downhill riders. Not for me but very interesting to watch the near misses of bike, rider and tree.

Looks as if its in original position, just not in the ground, so we are marking this as damaged only. Great location, lovely view.

A very difficult one to approach. It is located in a fir tree plantation on the top of a ridge. The approach I took meant climbing up the side of a steep hill which has been laid out as a mountain biking course. The pillar itself is leaning at an angle and it appears that someone has tried to dig it up. My first impression was that it had been moved, but the measured location on the GPS seems to indicate that it is in the right place.
