Field margins from minor road to NE, then followed tractor tram-lines through a maturing cereal crop to trig at summit of Rowley's Hill. Original top cap has been lost and replaced with an asphalt plug; rear sight hole open. Good 360 panorama. Took a visit down into the bowels of the Harston ROC nuclear fall-out monitoring bunker located near the 29m spot height on the way back.

Fairly easy walk across farm fields largely following farmer's tracks - started on road mid-way between Harston and Newton. Very claggy underfoot however.

Ascended from NE along SE fence of house garden then over stubble of harvested fields to skyline trig pillar. 2 farmers ploughing the N side of the field either don't notice me or aren't interested so easily up to pillar. Fine evening, pillar guilded by lowering sun. Good condition but being undermined by ploughing on its E side. Good views, slightly higher ground to NW.

Rowley's hill... a bit of a poignant place to visit. It feels like a shrine to my cousin Mark Rowley who died few years back.

Revisit for photos. vgc, asphalt plug, Star of David motif scratched into side, seems to have lost its GPS plaque since my 2003 visit. Mid arable at summit: summit area had been harvested but lower slopes still had crop involving fairly circuitous route, from NNE, beside railway and along tramlines. Chalk pit WNW of summit has nice population of small-flowered fumitory if you like that sort of thing.

Slightly damaged 25th Oct 2008  12:44  by pharisee

I started northeast of this one, parking off the road between Harston and Newton. Thereís just enough room to pull off the road without blocking the farm track at TL 43267 50010. You can see the T/P up on the hill and an easy walk along the farm track will get you to within about 100 yards of the pillar. The field had been recently cultivated and there were no crops in evidence so there were no problems reaching the T/P. Apart from the tarmac replacement plug, the pillar is in good condition considering itís somewhat vulnerable location. The views of open farmland are nice but hardly exciting.

In the middle of a field with some good views to the north and over Cambridge. Difficult to access; it may best be left to autumn before crops are planted.

Situated slightly below crown of the hill in middle of field approx 100m due South of a copse of Lime trees. At time of visit, field heavily planted with Barley so care must be taken not to damage crop. Likely to be a guagmire in winter. Owner's permission required. Be careful crossing the railway line!
