Stew B's easy approach all be it fortuitous consequnce of inability to park. Last trig to complete the Wrexham & Llangollen 256 OS map...Approached from the North via the 'Esclusham Mountain road' with intent on parking at Worlds End but failed to locate the car park so off-road parked pre Bryn Cottage at GR 21788 45270 to the left of a bench 'perched' on the embankment...Road walked South/South-East to 'pick-up' the path 'heading' uphill on the left by a finger-post GR 22130 44075. Leading to & following a wet gully, the path becomes rockier with a bit of a scramble 'developing' nothing especially serious but requiring a little more care on descent. Exiting the scramble, but a short way on carry straight on up past the finger-post to 'take' a left veering right with, at some point a direct North thro' the heather. I made my break for North at GR 235 453 & to be honest it wasn't half bad only lasting 15 minutes if that...A most pleasant route courtesy of the scramble...10516 steps, 5.8 miles taking about 2.5 hours! There's a grassy bay where parking is possible quite near the finger-posted left which would take some time & distance off the walk...a van was parked there as I walked back.

KJ Visited on a walk from Trevor Rocks car park taking in the top and foot of the stunning Eglwyseg escarpment on a sunny day with a refreshing breeze. From most directions heather and bilberry make for tough walking to the trig itself which will become tougher as the vegetation grows through the summer. However there is a very good and clear ATV track running from the path to the W marked on the 1:25000 OS at SJ228465 up to the summit of the hill and round to near the trig itself where a small track is being worn through the heather. Bit too hazy to enjoy the big vista to the E but a great viewpoint.

Then headed east from there up to the pillar along a track which is not on OS Maps. Fantastic scenery and suberb views all round, including of Cyrn-y-Brain. This is a crested trig pillar, as it was built by the Royal Engineers in the mid 1940's, and they would place their regimental crest on to the pillar. Wynnstay Hall near Ruabon, Wrexham, was used as a training establishment for the Royal Engineers Survey Cadre, and as part of their training during the 1943-47 period, the trainees were tasked with building some of the secondary and third order pillars. This pillar is one of only eight that have the crest. 4th of 5 pillars today in the Clwydian Hills, and 4th of 8 trigs in total

Planned on parking in the car park shown on the map almost due N of the pillar. When I arrived there were signs saying no parking as it's a turning circle for forestry lorries! I ignored that and set off on the track which goes SE and once I'd got to the highest point struck out across the rough moor to the pillar, which at this point looks to be miles away (in fact it's just over a mile). Returned the same way. If you like heather bashing, you'll love this route!
