This was the pillar but has had the top part removed for whatever reason. The bolt which can now be seen, is the levelling datum point which sits at the bottom of the pillar, they are observed through the site holes. A plumb bob is fixed to the plug on top of the pillar and the pillar is adjusted until the plumb bob lines up with the center of the bolt

Easily found, unlike most Surface Blocks! Far too chunky for a common or garden surface block, so reckon this is most likely the base of the original pillar. The bolt has a small central hole which would have held the original Upper Centre point. [GRP has clarified that is more likely the Lower Centre point.] Not quite sure what condition to log this as - if treated as a Surface Block it is in Good condition but, if regarded as a Pillar, it's somewhere between Damaged and Totally Missing! Information from OS via Trigonomy is that the pillar was destroyed 3/61, and had FB S4672.

My 1980s OS landranger 129 shows no blue triangle merely a 58 metre spot height. The database tells me of a pillar so what do we have. Well actually its a sort of FBM hybrid - no underground chamber with granite bock, a surface concrete block that has not quite grown up to be a proper pillar. But there it is at the top of the lane 5 metres before the gate just before the ever present telecoms masts.
