Parked at the bottom of the track which goes up to the mast. Lovely sunny day, but a cold wind at the summit. Quite hazy so views weren't as good as could be.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 23rd August 1959, cost not on record. Computed by distomat survey as secondary triangulation station HU46/DM/20 within the Shetlands block during 1961. Levelled for height also in 1951. Last maintained by the OS in June 1980. SITE VISIT: Westmost pillar on Shetland Mainland. Overall approach from ENE. Parked off SW side of A971 at HU207564, just north of track. Followed mapped track SW onto Shendale Hill then veered south around the valley of Shen Dale before turning west and making for the main summit of Sandness Hill. Open hill used for grazing purposes. Column in fair condition with chipped apex damage. Pillar seems to have been constructed off plumb having an off centre spider to compensate. Spider retains OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces SSE ~158. Vented through NW sight hole. Outstanding 360 panoramic view includes Papa Stour, Ronas Hill, Fitful Head, Fair Isle and Foula.

I parked at HU 2068 5640, by the gate a little way up the track from near the cattle grid on the A971. I walked up the track to HU 1987 5591 before striking out to the west towards the summit with a steep-ish climb after crossing the Burn of Shendale. Pillar sits not far from a cairn and has some damage - chunks out of two corners of the top and some surface loss on a vertical edge. FB faces SSE; metal cap with raised letters; NNW sighthole open, all others plugged. Fantastic view of Papa Stour and Foula from here. Luckily managed to dodge the intermittent showers!

Walked up from the Sandness cattle grid. Excellent weather with great views of Papa Stour, Foula, Ronas Hill and west mainland trigs. Also a cracking view of Walls (pronounced Waas) that shows why it was named for its many voes. Continued walk by way of rocky plateau to Ramna Vord and down into Deep Dale.
