Asked permission, the course was closed today presumably as it was water logged - staff in the golf club didn't know what a trig was so I enlightened them before heading off for a surreal walk to the 11th green - trig is in a rough grass area but in good condition. No 2 of 6 today.

Parked on Camp Lane. Then walked up Park Lane to where the old entrance to the Sandwell Park Golf Club used to be. There is now a metal barrier in place, which blocks off the entrance, but there is a gap between the metal barrier and the wall on the right hand side. Squeezed through the gap and then walked up to the pillar, which is in the rough near the 11th green.

I had more luck with this, the second trig of the new year. There is a gate just off Park Ln where the brickwork has a gap that I could squeeze through. Though there is quite a lot of junk by the gate. Like a dead PC and cable casing that has been stripped of its copper wire. I was aware there might be needles lying around! It was a short walk along the edge of a golf course to the trig. It looks very well cared for with a bright white coat of fresh paint.

We intended to ask at the golf course for permission but ended up walking from Dartmoor park and came the other way through the woods following the path along the walk. All was well until about 200m when the land got a bit wilder and we were not appropriately dressed in crop trousers. After bagging the trig we spotted a better track but still couldn't have avoided 100m of nettle and bramble infested land. Managed the squeeze out at the edge of the big gate to the road although there didn't look enough space!

Cycled up drive to Golf Club. I'm not sure if it was an official or a player I spoke to, but he knew what I was after, but couldn't offer easy directions. He did say there was a public footpath across the course. Retraced up drive and found that there is a public footpath sign, similar to a street name, by the entrance, but nothing pointing anywhere onto the course. Whether it was Sunday afternoon, threatened bad weather or the Open Championship on TV, there were no players at this end of the course as I found my own way to the pillar using the power lines as a guide. Not much to see as many trees line the fairways.

To avoid problems of access drive into the Golf Club and seek out the Professional's Shop. Explain what you're doing and they'll allow access. Follow access road back towards entrance and walk onto the course. Beware of flying golf balls. Don't forget to ask for the security barrier code so you can get out. Tip from a golfer!

This trig is in West Bromwich, it is also very scenic, being on the edge of a golf course which is an excuse for a forest. A small snowfall, that paralysed Birmingham, put paid to the golfers, so I had a very enjoyable walk in the woods. Birdlife was abundant, and I followed fox tracks to the pillar and deer tracks away, probably muntjac. Pillar was in near perfect condition with a faint script on the plug. Still painted. This was the second sucessive pillar visited from which I could see a football ground. The downside was the infernal racket coming from the nearby M5
