September Camp 2023 - Nidderdale. Having left Ouster Bank Pillar took a lovely walk along a good track past interesting rock outcrops (Jenny Twigg) and White Lodge Crags. The track is very sandy! Pillar sits off the track but is visible and it's a case of picking the best trigger's track across what could be wet land. The heavens opened as we reached this sadly damaged trig sitting on it's own rock on a lonely Yorkshire moor. Retrace back to Lofthouse and camp for a camp fire and some refreshments to mark the final tent night of this year.

A wonderful trig, but a dreadful walk in. I parked at the tiny spot at the junction of Wreaks Lane and Brown Bank Road; someone had parked appallingly so I had to ditch the car in the hedge. A dull-as-ditchwater stroll up Wreaks Lane to Sandy Hill led to a scrubby track straight to the pillar. The trig is knackered, with substantial damage to the top and one side. The concrete is crumbling away, and the spider is exposed at two of three ends - it might not survive another bad winter. Its condition does nothing to detract from the location, though - it is spectacular. It's just a shame that grouse moors - and this one in particular - are ecological deserts. The return the same way was as boring as the way in. Onwards to Camp Hill...

The final bit was across a patch of alternatiing very dry and very puddley heather moor. The track as shown on the OS map leading most of the way to the trig was non-existant today, other than an initial obvious few feet, forget it. Its heather or water. Additionally the ROW across Langwith Ridge is not evident (or waymarked) either. View, well as the trig sits on a plateau you dont get a lot, south to Stone & Ears is ok but its mainly lonely moorland.
