Slightly damaged 10th Feb 2019  09:20  by David Bremner

Scaraben climbed on a cold, cold day. Just to see that the trig was okay. With asphalt plug and FB fine. Though a weathered top - now enough of this rhyme! I last climbed this hill when the Sugababes were big in the charts and I wondered if they'd record the above lyrics with me to celebrate bagging all the Caithness primary pillars. A fantasy, I know, but one that got me to the top! I parked up at Braemore by the telephone box and followed the track over the bridge, past an abandoned house, over the deer fence ladder and on to open hill. I decided on the longer and more gradual route up the col between E Scaraben and Scaraben then along to the summit. I managed to find a knee-deep bog in this col! The top is a fine viewpoint and the highest point on a good ridge with excellent views. The pillar sits in a wind shelter cairn and is weathered a bit on its top edges and corners. Views include Morven, Maiden Pap, Creag Thoraraidh, Ben Dhorain, Clyth Ness, Tarbat Ness, Ben Griams, Ben Loyal, Ben Hope and a large area of Caithness moor. Back by pretty much the same route.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 20th July 1948 costing 100.17s.4d. Computed as primary triangulation station PP397 as part of Figure 6 of the OSGB36 primary retriangulation network during 1951. Levelled for height in 1952. Last maintained by the OS in July 1981. SITE VISIT: Up from Braemore Lodge. Parking provided at end of public road to NE of bridge at ND073304. Crossed bridge and followed mapped tracks and paths to ND100284 then turned west on a route over the tops to the main summit. Pillar in fair condition, weather damage to top edges. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces southeast, ~135. All four horizontal sight holes open, innards partly blocked with debris. Breathtaking full 360 panoramic view. Returned to Braemore taking a more direct route via East Cairnfin. Last of 36 pillar visits on my 2013 tour of the far north.
