Minor detour off footpath. A low-level choice of location for a trig, given all the surrounding hills. Plug intact, tree's company. Breeze picking up.

A nice day so we had a walk out with the neighbours and their dog. Parked up at banks Point on the NW end of Bassenthwaite Lake and walked over the bridge then nipped through the Armathwaite Hotel Nature Reserve to join up with the FP leading through Cottage Wood. Followed the FP all the way to the trig field then diverted slightly to reach the pillar. Great views all around. Decided to head back along the roads but they were busier than expected so nipped through Trafford's Caravan Site to return to the FP and back to the car. Pint in The Ruddings Hotel at Braithwaite afterwards.

From the A591, follow the road down to Scarness. About half a mile down the road you will see the trig up on the hill to the right in a field. You can park at the gate here and walk up the hill. Good views over towards Skiddaw.

A good one to save for a rainy day in the Lakes. Easy access in a field with a PRoW running across it. Climbed Dodd first then onto Keswick to watch the play "Beryl" (Beryl Burton). Gifted to the loveliest theatre in the land on the shores of Derwent with majestic mountains in the background. No place to match it.

Didn't realise it was a revisit til I logged on. Beautiful setting up a gently sloping field with one solitary beautiful tree to juxtapose it. And glorious sunny afternoon.

I shouldn't have done this one straight after battling the elements on a snowy Skiddaw or after taking in the wonderful airy views from Ullock Pike. But I had done, so Scarness seemed plain fare in comparison.

A decent TP to visit in the Lakes if the weather is poor. Parked at Forestry Commission car park at Dodd and walked over to Church of St Bega and then on via a section of the Allerdale trail to lane close to TP.

Lots of pipe laying work going on along the north side of Bassenthwaite Lake. Heavy duty vehicles are a frequent obstacle when trying to access this road/car trigger option. Photo bombed by the sheep.

HISTORY: Pilar completed 1st November 1949 costing £9.16s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NY11/T52 in 1952. Levelled for height in 1959. Last maintained by the OS, 20th July 2000. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from south. Parked on NE side of unclassified road at NY222302, south of junction of lanes. Walked an anti-clockwise loop via mapped lanes and RoW just south of pillar. Unusual Lake District 'summit'. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces southwest ~221°. All sight holes open, innards blocked with debris. Limited views include Binsey and Skiddaw.

Tree gives it the above average mark cloud hiding the real view. One for gaitors in the wet as the grass is now knee height. Parking at end of footpath.

Got this whilst on a visit to Dodd Wood to see the ospreys. Nice views of Bassenthwaite Lake and the ospreys. The photograph and grid reference were added on a return visit on the 24th September 2103.
