Ever get that feeling, as you laboriously huff and puff your way up a hillside "HOW did I manage to get THIS unfit??!!" Up from Shillmoor on a very blustery day, but wonderfully clear and bright to complete what I think is probably the last of the really great Trig Points in Northumberland and one of the last remain highpoints in the Cheviots I'd not set foot on before. A fantastic walk with superb views, and no one else on the hills at all.

A fittingly grand trig to end this batch in Northumbria. A glorious drive from Rothbury, quiet car park at Wedders Leap - tempted to walk all the way round the hill - but we don't - good job may still be there now! Lots of waxcaps as the car park notice advises - beautiful.

This should have been a good walk to take in Windy Gyle 6km to the N, and tumps between, but was curtailed to just being a quick up and down from Wedder Leap car park! Pillar is a bit care worn with chipped top edges but a reasonably fresh coat of white paint picks it up. Located within a shelter cairn, top cap has been replaced with an asphalt plug; left/front/rear sight holes open, RHD side plug degrading. Panoramic views slightly obscured by low thin cloud.

Parked and crossed river at Wedder Leap, then direct cardiovascular route up the valley side. As Jimmy notes, the summit cairn looks like the remains of a huge (18m diameter) prehistoric cairn rebuilt into a shelter and small cairns. One of the modern cairns contains a stone engraved "IN MEMORY JOHN GEORGE BRAMLEY 4-2-1980 / 19-2-2010 23 REG SOLDIER R.E.". The stone is easily found as it's limestone, and is much greyer than the other stones. The sunlight was clear and low, picking out the ancient Coquetdale landscape well, including the prehistoric cairns and trig on Thirl Moor across the far side of the military range.

Nevermind, Shillhope cleared for a short time and I climbed it. Usually good views to the big Cheviot tops but not today! Easy climb to top via Inner Hill from Shillmoor and ground was damp but not impassable. Trig ok apart from some old grafitti. Good shelter cairn surrounding trig.
