From Framlington Gate, good parking in large layby. NNW on RoW initially, then followed northern edge of felled plantation. Pillar sits on a fenceline in heather. Original centre cap retained, lightly indented lettering; LHD side sight hole open, RHD side plug degrading. Extensive views.

Good parking in layby at Framlington Gate. We take the track NNW then follow along the forest edge crossing the S side of Wooden Hill. A bit of a path in places but also some rough going in wet grass. Turning S from the NW corner of the forest the going becomes easier to the grass/heather/bilberry summit with trig pillar on W side of the fence. On E side of fence is an ancient stone cairn/wind shelter. There’s also a B.S. with old trig arrow cut into top surface(?) Blustery W wind, overcast, dry, sun on distant coast to N. Cheviots in cloud. Return by descending E through the mature forest – easy going through tall trees – and gain track back to car.(much easier)

1st of 2 today. Well this is an interesting one! Shirlah Pike or Shirlaw Pike as shown on OS maps was reported missing on 13/9/02. See link https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/gps/legacy-control-information/triangulation-stations .Details on Landranger Sheet 81. Well it's definitely there! Perhaps fewer logs appear online as it's not in either of the Northumberland Trig Logbooks or other sites? I discovered this with help directly from Ordnance Survey giving 157 trigs in Northumberland excluding post 1974 Tyne & Wear? A fantastic location and top marks for this hidden gem! I navigated via access land and avoided the extensive tree felling taking place.

We parked at Framlington Gate and walked up through the woods via Lamb Crags, through a firebreak and out onto the moor. Then a few hundred metres of climbing through waist high heather up to the trig. Difficult to spot the trig from a distance today, as the phantom trig painter had only just visited (with his dog!) and the trig now blends nicely into the snow! Lovely job, it looks very smart. N.B. The rifle range was very much in use today

We walked up through Longframlington Woods before using the firebreak (note it is a shooting range, though looked out of use for sometime) out of the forest. This bypasses a lot of the moorland slog but is a longer way around (circa 5 miles round). The woodland tracks are very good though. About 0.3 miles to the summit and then back along the thick heather. Not as boggy from this direction. Look on OS maps for firebreak with lamb crags. Gate at top of lamb crags so easy access to moors. A few boundary stones on route too inc one at the trig. The views from this trig over Cheviots and Simonside are superb. Trig 26 for Riley! Would mark higher but that final slog was a pain.

My second visit, different route. Parked at Framlington Gate and followed bridal path NW before turning W and climbing Wooden Hill, along plantation edge W and S to TP. Have to say this a much more enjoyable route than the yomp across Gowk Hill from the B6341. My previous visit to Shirlah had been on a murky, dull evening and I'd long wanted to revisit it on a clearer day. Tonight did not disappoint. Stunning views North, South & West. So many hills visible and identifiable. Superb sunset, and being mid August the heather was in full flower - it all added up to a fantastic evenings walk.

Cross over two fences at corner of woodland to head south towards the trig point. Same route back at first but on the northern edge of wood went over fence to pick up the second firebreak marked of the O.S map which bring you down to a track. This is much easier route back.

Parked up, as others below, at point 278 on the B6341 and took a fairly direct line over the moor to the obvious high point a mile or so to the south east. After the previous days weather had been more redolent of January than July it was a pretty soggy yomp in places, but we'd dressed appropriately and enjoyed the exercise and the accompanying cry of the curlews. The tree line obscures all views NE through to SE, but otherwise the views are extensive, albeit tonight Simonside and the Cheviots were capped with low cloud. A probable revisit on a brighter, clearer day.
