Parked the car at Scarvister and followed the track to the top of the hill. Pillar is set in a rumble of stones, possible an old ruin. Beautiful views to the west over Silwick and beyond. Looking East lovely views towards Burra. This trig point was easily accessible.

From end of public road at Silwick (HU 2924 4225). Near enough direct line to here as part of a short circular walk for local hills. Pillar sits next to a stone wall within a largely collapsed enclosure. Centre cap is missing, no plug; RHS sight hole open. Extensive views, west to Erne's Stack etc particularly good.

Road end, farm track to sheep pens and then along the wire fence. Very fine coastal views, the cliffs of Fitful Head in the distance. 30mph NNW wind, cumulus in blue skies, sunshine. Lunch in shelter of wall.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 3rd October 1959, cost not on record. Computed by distomat survey as secondary triangulation station HU46/DM/27 within the Shetlands block during 1961. Levelled for height also in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in June 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from the north. Room for parking at road end, Scarvister, HU303425. Followed mapped track until fenceline which leads to summit. A feint path leads all the way. Pillar on north side of wall in what appear to be the remains of an old building. Grazing land, sheep in residence. Column in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces ENE, ~66°. Vented through NW sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view.

Easy walk up from Scarvister along track and then along fenceline (minding the boggy bits) to pillar which sits within a low stone-built surround. FB faces ENE; top has plug/cap missing; NNW sighthole open, all others plugged. Great view of sheer cliffs and stacks and Foula to the west. Just over the wall about 8 metres away is a small granite block just below the surface from where observations were taken for the original survey of Shetland. It has a circular hole in the middle and three lines emanating from it in the classic 'bench mark' shape and is described in the OS trig database as 'Old Trig'.

Started from the Scarvister road end and followed the track up to the sheep pens then a short distance SW to the trig. Trig appears to be sited in the remains of an outhouse, part of an old croft house. Views NW of the cliffs towards Silwick make this worth a return visit but in better weather.

I began this morning at the camping böd in Easter Skeld. It was bright and sunny up at the trig, with the red sandstone sea stacks at Sil Wick looking particularly striking. I then continued on, around Gruting Voe, to the böd in Walls, walking along the road in worsening conditions, glad of my early start.
