I finished the Peak District trig point challenge today naming now visited all 88 remaining pillars. From the outset I did not have plan but with just four left to visit, I decided to visit all four in a day and saved Shutlingsloe for the last visit. It looks fantastic from a distance with views to match in all directions from the top. I parked at Clough House for a three mile circular hike that included the summit. The pillar appears to be in generally good condition but the centre for the spider has been replaced with a plain disc.

I noticed from a photograph of the spider from last month, that that had increased to two. However, when I got to the pillar this morning, I found to my disgust that there were now 4 padlocks! Removed the padlocks with a bolt cutter that I had brought with me, and the pillar is now looking a lot better.

I helped out today at one of my running clubs fell races. The race was ran in memory of a member who tragically died in a motor bike accident. The race went through Macclesfield Forest and up/down this hill twice (it is often referred to as the "Cheshire Matterhorn", but locals call it "Shuts" - dont get the vowel wrong). Once all done and dusted, we walked a circular route from Standing Stone car park. Getting very wafty up there, but extensive views in all directions. I gift "Shuts" to his partner and son whom he left behind.

From there, I took the permissive bridleway which branches on to a permissive footpath directly to the top of Buxtors Hill and from there, a splendid walk along the ridge top to Shutlingsloe. The final steep climb had me panting a bit by the time I reached the summit. The pillar, once painted white, was in good condition apart from the missing centre plug. A plastic bung was it’s replacement. The views were awesome; you could see for miles in all directions. Pity it was hazy in the distance. On a clear, bright winter’s day they would be truly excellent. There is a stainless steel, topographic, memorial attached to a rock nearby stating “In memory of Arthur Smith a doughty fighter for footpaths and access to mountains. Erected by the Peak and Northern Footpaths Society and the Ramblers Assocn.” The pillar also has a plaque screwed to it commemorating 20 years of Remembrance Sunday visits by “Holdens Hoofers”
