Oh, dear! Decided that the best way of tackling this pillar was to approach from the bridleway to the east. Wrong again! Got hopelessly caught up in a jungle of rapeseed, thistles, nettles and brambles all about 5 foot high which made progress towards the pillar impossible. I should have gone from the footpath to the west but, having eventually managed to extricate myself from the clutches of the undergrowth I didn't have time to start again so this will have to be a second visit! I'm quite sure the pillar is still there - but I simply had no chance of reaching it.
