Slow careful ride along byways heading south west from Sidbury Hill, including along the Old Marlborough Road. Very few features to help with orientation along the way. High ground was the best clue and turned out to be the correct spot. Parked beside a gate with a red cone next to it. Up the hill, pillar visible at the top. FB has been damaged, a couple of numbers are chipped. Good views to east, south and west.

Drive almost all the way along good track, pillar is slightly damaged (been shot?) and is located a few meters inside the ranges, flags flying today, but no evidence of any activity so i hoped over the fence and walked over, not a soul around.

Parked near Milston Farm Bldgs, walked on along the track turned left, pillar became visible on my right, but first conquer the gate, not easy with the wire mesh on the bottom half, and me only 5' nothing.... End of a good morning on the Plain.

Down A435 to Ablington, then up BW that goes through farmyard. Tractor moving hay bails almost pulled out on me as I went past. Driver waved "Sorry". When I got close to Trig, I found it was just the other side of the Red Flag. 4WD with "Training Safety" on it went past. Hmmm... I looked around and hopped over the gate, quickly walked up and bagged trig and got back over gate, in about 2 mins flat.

What a unique habitat Salisbury Plain is; there were some moments of absolute peace & tranquillity, and some beautiful scenes of an early evening sunset as mist rolled over the grasslands; on other occasions the Army's presence changes the atmosphere completely with sudden exciting bursts of noisy activity and frenzied movement. Shame they've used this pillar for target practice though - otherwise in good condition. Thoroughly enjoyable day wandering the Plain; my only disappointment being no sighting of the Great Bustard!

Located on the edge of the Milston Range MoD training area, access can be gained by car via Milston Drive. The pillar is in good condition bar the flush bracket where some damage has made reading the numbers difficult, although they can be discerned. All sight holes are open and the plug is missing. Good views west across the Avon valley towards the Westdown Range.

The pillar is on a small hill in an army training area, the area is traversed by modern army tracks, ancient track-ways and droves. It has FB S1923 with the last two digits damaged and lacks a plug. The site is within the area of the unimproved chalk downland of the Salisbury Plain SSSI. A nearby plantation lies to the north; downs to the west; Beacon Hill and an oblique view of a kiwi chalk figure to the south and glimpses of a few of the tumuli of the Bronze Age round barrow cemetery can be seen to the east behind the hawthorn bushes.

We parked at Brigmerston Corner and walked up over pleasant downland from there. It's quite a hike to the trig but some late wheatears flying around kept us interested. The trig is just in the range but there were no flags flying today. A military police Range Rover came past just as we were going to the trig and didn't even bother to stop. Extensive views. The damage to the FB looks like it may have been caused by bullets! who knows? Plug missing.
