Walked from parking area at Hunt House. It appears that a nearby cairn is in the centre of a stone circle. There are other nearby standing stones shown on OS maps. Beautiful views.

Took the path from the North. Fairly wet underfoot but a lovely sunny day. There is a path left of the large cairn straight to the pillar.

Continued a long round from Eller Beck Bridge and the pair of trigs on Louven Howe by picking up the track through Fen Bog, over the railway line and up across the moor on the Lyke Wake route. Reached the cairn and standing stones first before the trig. The pillar stands in a lovely spot with fabulous views; it is in good nick overall but has lost some of the pillar top to weathering.

Parked at the camp site entrance at Thornhill Farm then followed the footpath to the standing stones. Glorious weather allowing good all-round views. Very dry and high fire risk signage everywhere.

Arrived from the two pillars at Louven Howe to the East. Easy to follow tracks but very wet and muddy. An overcast grey afternoon. Carried on Northward to Goathland to catch the bus back to Whitby.

September Camp 2015 Goathland. First of two trigs on a roughly 16 mile hike from Goathland. Pillar wasn't obvious on approach but then spotted E of large cairn near standing stones. Trig Baggers have forged a small but boggy path to pillar. Missing cap but good condition. Lovely 360 degree views of NY Moors. On into the great forest....

Fourth pillar on the Lyke Wake Walk. Good condition. Nearby are a line of small standing stones and a large modern conical cairn. Decent views. FB faces south-west-ish, cap missing with no plug and north-east-ish sighthole open only.

I pulled off of the A169 onto a gravel road just south of the bridge over the Eller Beck. I parked and followed the gently rising track west to the pillar. A pleasant and undemanding walk of just over a mile and a half. The pillar is in generally good condition but the centre plug has been removed. There are three smallish (compared to some) standing stones nearby and a large cairn marks the crossing of two paths.

Me and Rocky (the vicious killer) walked nine miles today testing my new walking boots out (rocky did not have the boots on ! that was me). We parked up at Goathland then walked to Thomason Foss waterfalls then to Mallyan Spout waterfall then to Simon How trig point then back to Goathland,

Thomason Foss falls One of the waterfalls of the Thomason Foss series.
Mallyan Spout waterfall. Secon waterfall we visited today, now its on to the trig point.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 21st January 1948 costing £21.16s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NZ42/44 within the Middlesborough block during 1948. Levelled for height also in 1948. Last maintained by the OS in June 1984. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from east. Small car park at SE855986, also used for Louven Howe. Off A169 onto mapped track then path which crosses railway at SE852980 and continues to true summit, trig approx 100m to NE. Heather clad moor. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces southwest, ~223°. Vented through NE sight hole. 360° open outlook.

The best of the weekend by a long shot. Walked in from the North on the bridle way that crosses Moss Dike. Wet at the beginning but after that a good track and well marked by cairns. Trig has not only barrows but its own standing stones in alignment. Views across to Fylingdales and the occassional train heard on the North York Moors railway.

Walked up from main road in late evening. Whilst putting boots on an MOD policeman pulled up to check what I was up to. Nice man, told him I was planning to go up to Lilla Howe tomorrow so he made a note so I wouldn't be hassled. Had a good chat about the Lyke Wake Walk which I did in 85. Once at trig and Howe I was convinced that I never visited the trig in the eighties. No way would I have gone off route “just to bag a trig.” Great dusk views across moors and towards Fylingdales. Must say I miss the infamous golfballs.

Walked up the Lyke Wake Walk path from Ellor Beck car park – lots of water about path eroded into a gully with flowing water – rain and sleet – must get some better boots but you would need wellingtons to keep you feet dry in these conditions – tried to get photo with Flylingdales in the background.

Beware game keepers defending their indefensible Larsen Traps (near to Goathland Road). Expecting GOML treatment, but just watched as I walked near. Simon Howe itself is interesting. Compare some of the other nearby howes.

Just off the route of the Lyke Wake Walk. Bilsdale Mast visible to the west. Easy access from Eller Beck Bridge. Very typical moorland scenery.

Plug replaced by cover; one sighting-hole open. Distant views towards Bilsdale and good middle-distance views in most other directions. Easy access from Eller Beck bridge.
