A very quiet and lonely walk over from North Nab. The last quarter of a mile was a hard going over small boulders. I suspect we should have taken the more obvious path looping around from the west. Because we hadn't, choosing a route to Howgill proved tricky. Still. Fabulous spot with that all important rock climb possible to reach the pillar. The walk back to the Cavendish Pavilion was very pretty along the river, but perhaps a shade too long. Took a long time to find a decent pub afterwards too. (We obviously ignored the pompous Duke Of Devenshire.) Not sure where we ended up, but they didn't have crisps "as such". What?

Walked up the four or five miles from nr West End Church via the recently restored Rocking Hall Shooting Lodge. This is all via Access Land and is a much quieter alternative to the Valley of Desolation 'tourist route' A mild but blowy Boxing Day turned into a violently windy one and the final ascent up the rocks of Simon's Seat to the trig point was very buffety. The views from here are fantastic though I was glad to get down off the tops and into Appletreewick for a well-earned pint at the Craven Arms, from where I had arranged to be collected.

Decent enough view on a good day. I'm personally less than impressed by the track if you go up the popular way from Bolton Abbey/Valley of Desolation - it's a managed, large gravel track - other routes are far better. Revisited 30/09/2007 - very popular in todays autumnal sun. No cars, on foot.

Staying at the Devonshire Arms, but had to drive to the Cavendish Pavillion to start this walk as the riverside path was closed due to foot and mouth. Mist swirling around us as we had lunch at the trig, but with really spooky breaks in it offering glimpses of the surrounding rocks. Fantastic autumn colours in walk back down the Wharfe.
