Superb! Parked at the foot of the drive up to Skeflhill Farm and followed the track through the farmyard then forking left before Fouledge to head SW. Just beyond the Pep Sike we passed through a gate and followed the fence W directly up the hill to the summit cairn and the TP. Absolutely magnificent day, freezing cold and icy but not a cloud in the sky or a stitch of wind. Views outstanding in all directions. Had planned to continue S to Tudhope Hill, but a minor camera malfunction meant we returned directly to the car to recharge camera batteries while driving round to Tudhope. With a bit of planning and two cars I think Skelfhill to Tudhope would make a fantastic traverse walk...

Large parking area near Old Northhouse (NT 4509 0681). Excellent forest road leads to NT 4377 0384, eminently drivable, although marked as private, so decided to walk it. After road end, a good track proceeds to forest edge, then a rough track runs SSE to corner of forest when the hill is revealed - worth the walk just for that. The pillar sits at the hill summit adjacent to a large well-built cairn; centre cap missing, no plug; LHS and rear sight holes open. Extensive panoramic views.

From the small car park at Old Northouse. Long, dull walk in along forestry tracks with no views. Finally up firebreak as per Borderer with a million flies buzzing around my head. Short, steep pull up onto the summit for some magnificent views.

Followed the road through the plantation from the car park at Old Norhouse to a point a couple of hundred yards from where it ends. Just past an old caravan I took the broad break heading south east which clears the plantation within sight of the summit. Then followed the dyke and quad bike tracks to a crossing point and a well trodden path the last couple of hundred yards to the pillar. Great 360 views only slightly hazy but I'd take that for early April. The main gate by the car park was open to serve the residents of Alderybar and is a good enough condition to drive to the end. I was passed near the summit by a car looking for the woodland walks.

Parked at Old Northouse and walked along the forest road, a tough boggy slog up the forest edge then straight up the steep side of the hill. Skelfhill Pen is an interesting wee peak and we were very impressed with the panoramic views from the summit. Descended over the other side of the hill, a lovely little ridge with fantastic views. Decided to go back down the eastern edge of the forest, which was equally as boggy. Crossed the watercourse at the gap and re-entered the forest, battling with knee-deep bracken and heather and then having a struggle circumnavigating Alderybar Cottage and adjacent quarry before eventually rejoining the forest road, hooray! :)

The approach to Skelfhill Pen... ...the hill looking imposing, especially with the cloud giving out volcano vibes!

Had this one on the to do list for ages and with half a day to spare in the borders decided today is the day. This has everything for the perfect trig - nice walk in, pleasant climb to the summit and great views from the top; all it needs is a bit of snow on the top, oh but we had that today as well. Could have spent ages on the top watching the snow showers all round followed by bright sunshine but couldn't stay here all day. I think this is the hill we keep seeing from the Cheviots. Path back down was a bit greasy with the snow but a thoroughly enjoyable walk out. Only saw a couple of people just as we got back to the car

Visit this trig probably 4-5 times per week, minimum, sometime twice per day as I live at Fouledge OS 453046. Kind of grown attached to this trig over the last 18 months. Tired of constant vandalism to the ever decreasing windshelter, hence making a point of carrying a stone up each visit to help maintain it.
