A nice little bonus while ticking off the Wainwrights. We followed the OS Pathfinder Guide to the High Fells but decided we should start in Keswick rather than Underscar. A long walk which first went over Skiddaw Little Man, then the summit of Skiddaw itself with the pillar, and onto Bakestall before the long walk back along the Cumbria Way, skirting the lower slopes of Lonscale Fell. Finally made it back to the car at The Pheasant Inn where a pint went down a treat. Glorious warm sunny day but still breezy enough at the top to pop an extra layer on. As reported pillar has taken quite a beating, not sure I'd be in as good shape after 80 odd years up there.

January is very quiet in the Lakes, and probably the best time to visit the most popular "honey pots". Apart from a handful of people on Skiddaw, there was nobody on Lonscale, Jenkins, Hare Stones and Sale How. The latter was 666m and prompted me to dedicate today and the 12 Birketts visited to a baker called Damian. He was on a fag break early this morning, we got into conservation and he gave me one of his wonderful sough dough loaves.

For some reason snow never crossed my mind, despite watching City beat PSG on a wintry pitch in Manchester the night before. Needless to say I wasn't prepared for the snow flurries or a biting Northerly wind as we arrived at the pillar. At least the marvellous approach along The Edge up Ullock Pike and Long Side was done in sunshine. Surprised this is the first log of 2021, but I suppose we've had lockdown to contend with.
