First bag on a tour of the Cleveland Lowlands. Parked up by the cottages and asked at the last one. Nice chap said he looked after the field and it was OK to go ahead. Climbed over a tall fence then walked along a dry ditch. Found pillar OK then Red Arrows flew overhead. Not sure if that was for my bag or not.

Trig in hedge - easily reached. One corner of pillar has quite a chunk missing, but otherwise OK. Apparently land owner lives in Northallerton & locals walk their dogs on non-access land (western approach to trig). One tall fence to climb.

Having visited 3 pillars in the morning and had a good lunch in Darlington, I decided I had time and the cycling legs to loop around and attempt 3 more this afternoon. Took concrete road from A167 at the South edge of the village, passing row of terraced houses to field gate. Rough pasture in 1st field, climbed wooden rail fence at ditch rather than the mesh and barbed wire, stubble field, gateway directly ahead, pillar on left at far end of copse. No one seen, no stock disturbed, no damage caused, only footsteps left.

A joint visit with Carole. This turned out to be real failure. We met the landowner who refused to let us proceed to the pillar. Perhaps with some justification as we had just climbed the fence to get into his field. So we will leave it to another day and try and find the correct farm to ask permission from. [It is total supersition but we came past some bungalows to the west and could well have been spotted going through a gate onto private land. I just wonder whether a phone call was made on a neighbourhood watch basis as it seemed a real coincidence that the land owner was waiting for us with his dog on such an inclement day - very misty. Anyway it's just a thought. So, my advice is go and ask.]
