About a mile uphill west of Chard on A30, quite a sharp right turn north east off the main road by a garden centre on north side of road. Very uneven road surface. Pulled over on roadside by entrance to field next to some sort of concrete look out tower. Walked back west along lane looking into hedge. Pillar just visible through hedge on south side of hedge. Bit of a scramble through hedge and over barbed wire fence. Good condition, cap missing. Views limited, across field and eastwards. Hawthorn bushes touching top of pillar, cut back what I could with secateurs but need a saw really. Easier way back was east along field edge to and over fence around concrete lookout.

Realised that I would be driving past this trig point on my way to a geocache so I parked along the road and walked back to spot the trig. Unfortunately for me and perhaps other trig pointers, the trig is on the field side of the road and I couldn't find a way in apart from scrambling up and across the bank+hedge with a wire fence - decided I wasn't going to do that especially as there were some farmers in the opposite field moving cattle who could have seen me on top of the bank if looking my way. From what I could see, the trig was fine; views were rural countryside

Parked at bend in Catch Gate Lane a little NE of trig, handy for this pillar and the Gipsy Lane block. Trig is on field side of thorn hedgerow on S side road, no obvious access to field so went across ditch and through the thorn. Pillar vgc standing on large area plinth. Original cap missing, no plug; front and rear sight holes open. Extensive views E. Had a look inside the Chard ROC post on the way back. A bit worse for wear than the 2001 log on Subterranea Britannica site - http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/roc/db/988805870.002001.html

The pillar stands on the edge of a ploughed field on a small hill to the west of Chard. The field was accessed directly from the adjacent Catch Gate Lane next to a ROC post. The trig stands on a six inch plinth; it lacks a cap or plug and it has FB S3726. Surrounding trees and hedges restrict the view from ground level. From the top of the pillar there is a view north to the ridges of the Blackdown Hills and east to the Yeovil Scarplands.
