One of eight trig points bagged in the south of the Peak District. This was the fourth. This one took a lot more effort than I had anticipated though it was strangely enjoyable. Having read the notes of previous visitors I parked at the start of the lane leading to the farm. I walked to it but could not find anyone so I returned to my car and drove around the hill and parked outside St James & St Bartholowmew Church. From there his was hike up and down several hills crossing the River Hamps for a steep ascent following the very muddy PROW through the woods. It was then a hike accross the top of the hill to the trig point. It is in generally good condition and retains the original centre for the spider but the foundations are partly exposed on one side.great views of the surrounding hills.

I came from Musden Low via Calton Green, Slade House to Soles Hollow. Ascended by handrailing the second wall after the farm. Took in the magnificent views before continuing N along the ridge and rejoined the path at the wood edge. This path then joins the Manifold Way. Down into the Manifold Valley, and across the dry riverbed to join the Manifold & Hamps Way. Shortly after crossing the also dry bed of the River Hamps for the third time there is a path that heads up through Soles Wood on a right hand bend in the river. Climbed up the wooded valley. Immediately after breaking from the woods I zig-zagged up the hill and along the ridge to the trig point. This is the best approach if you don't want to trouble what seems like a friendly farmer as you can use the ridge as cover. Superb views with hills in all directions spoilt only by a quarry to the SSW. Pillar is in good order with original cap having shallow indented lettering. Had a chat with a serious hill-bagger who'd completed the Welsh 3000s challenge.

Traipse down the cycle track is frankly a bit dull, (apart maybe from the hippy commune. What's that all about?). Then nearly, oh so nearly, a heaven sent moment. At the very far end, just as we need some R&R, a tea-room ... open ... with a HOT TUB in the garden!!!!!! No, really. We need to keep going. It's getting late. A short steep climb into refreshing high ground and the stealth route suggested by whoever, down Soles Hollow until its time to trudge up out of sight of what seems to be a quite friendly farmer. (Especially subvert on the ridge.) Again, probably good views on a good day. This was dry but low cloud. Is that 2 or 4?
