Parked on road at North End in Batheaston then on foot up lane to west then north west. Could have actually driven up as quite a well surfaced road even though quite steep. At gate onto NT land uphill onto ramparts of fort. Spotted pillar on west edge of hill. Great views across Bath and to north, some sort of tower on hill to north. Also to south. Cap missing. Ground around base has been eroded. Has a connection with a song by Peter Gabriel. Commemorative stone about 100 metres east of the pillar recognising donation of land by a benefactor. Some bits now missing from each corner, wonder what it looked like originally.

Interesting to finally visit the place that inspired the Peter Gabriel song!. Parked on Solsbury Lane. Took the public right of way (PRoW) from there, and then when the PRoW takes a right turn, left the PRoW and walked up to the summit and the pillar. The plug is missing from the spider. Spectacular views of Bath from the summit, including of Bath Abbey. Solsbury Hill is a candidate in terms of being a possible site for the Battle of Badon, in which the Britons defeated the Anglo-Saxons in the late 5th / early 6th century. Whilst the battle was real enough, legend has it that the Britons were led by King Arthur, but that is almost certainly a myth.

Parked at the top of Eagle Road and took the footpath from the corner of Seven Acres Lane. Footpath crosses a couple of steep fields, then a large very steep one, and then when I reached the road at the end, I climbed further up a large grassy bank to the top of hill. And it's fair to say I was knackered when I got there! However, for such an expansive and impressive view encompassing one of the most beautiful British cities it's been my privilege to visit, it's absolutely worth it. Stunning vistas in all directions, and the daisy-covered undulating hill itself is a thing of beauty in its own right. Pillar is right on the edge of the hill, and has had its base exposed. However, it's still standing firm and in good condition.

He wrote the song about a spiritual experience atop Little Solsbury Hill in Somerset, England, after his departure from the progressive rock band Genesis, of which he had been the lead singer since its inception. Gabriel has said of the song's meaning, "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go.His former bandmate Tony Banks acknowledges that the song reflects Gabriel's decision to break ties with Genesis, but it can also be applied in a broader sense to situations of letting go in general.

Logged this on the way to getting the City Lights cache. It is on the summit of the National Trust-owned hill with a wonderful view of the city of Bath spread out below. There is no plug and no paint. However, there is some [now mainly obliterated] graffiti and a few chips out of the edges of one face but generally good condition. N sighthole open, the others closed. The concrete base is now about 18" above soil level as the pillar is obviously a gathering ground and the soil has badly eroded. This afternoon there were about 15 swallows milling around it. Lovely spot!
