Superb walking today in this glorious area; good to be back. We were lucky enough to have holidays here (an old cottage in the hamlet of Acton) for many years. Pillar fine with cap and shallow engraving; one sight-hole open. Now, I wonder whether the Square & Compass will be open by the time I stroll over there?

Minor detour off one of our favourite walks - Corfe Castle, Kingston, Chapman's Pool, Worth Matravers (and obligatory stop at Square and Compass, great pub). Then SWCP back to Swanage and steam train to Corfe. Today a wonderful day for it, great views particularly north along the downs, and Corfe Castle itself. Metal cap, shallow letters, excellent condition.

On another of our lads hike (while the girls were away!), Craig and I drove to Dorset in the morning, found a campsite near Swanage, and set off for a short afternoon ramble... It was not long before we bagged our first Trig of the weekend, it was very easy to get to, sitting next to the wall still with its cap, located at the top of the field, while the cows munched grass at the bottom. Lovely views as we watched a couple of deer running through the next field.

Tracks and land around South Barn are marked “Private Keep Out”. Approach site via “Priests Way”, running north of south Barn following a path into a field to the south in the direction of the Pillar, resulting in climbing over a stone wall only to find at least `hundred head of cattle adjacent to gate, which eventually lead to the goal. The exit route was due west along the edge of the field, past a pond and through a metal gate, set in barbed wire fence, which gave access to a track running north south. Going south leads to the path running along the top of the Downs, being parallel to that along the cliff edge. Six deer observed bounding across field to the west whilst walking towards pond. Pillar in good condition, complete with top plate. View to the North West, shows why Corfe Castle is situated where it is.

We parked at the top of Swanage and found the track that leads past the side of Belle Vue Farm. Carry on along this track until you get to the last hedge line before the quarry. This gives you access into the field whereas previously there has been a barbed wire fence on your right. Go west across the field, negotiate the stone wall, and then head slightly north of west to a metal gate in the next wall line. Go through this gate and the trig is just to the side of the wall about 30 metres north. The fields are pasture and were empty at the time, although the field south of the trig field had cattle in it. The stone walls are more reminiscent of the Yorkshire Dales than Dorset. Pleasant views. Plug with indented lettering.
