Walking with friends from Buwick to St Margaret's Hope via the coastal path along the eastern side of South Ronaldsay but I broken off at Hesta Head to go back and get the car. This was my lunch stop in the fog. I didn't notice any lean on the pillar.

First trig bagged on Orkney after departing the ferry at St Margaret's Hope. Pillar is sited on a large concrete slab, possible of WWII vintage, that has a definite tilt to it, thus rendering the trig unusable, therefore 'damaged' is the logical classification. An original centre cap is retained, indented lettering; front sight hole open, others not noted. Extensive views over South Ronaldsay.

Parked at the bottom of the track as my low slung car didn't like the pot holes. Easy walk up to the trig beside the plethora of masts. Trig with centre cap and unusually for Orkney, indented letters. Mist rolled in on the descent.

Good condition pillar situated on a massive plinth atop Ward Hill. Started the day in a lazy way and drove up to the trig. Low cloud hemmed the views in but would be superb on a clear day. FB faces south-west-ish with south-west-ish and south-east-ish sightholes open. Cap present with sunken lettering. Plaque above the flush bracket.

I arrived late evening having spent the whole day travelling. I'd walked along the road from the ferry in Burwick, then up the farm track. A nice and easy, stress free trig was just what I needed right then. The views were good down the east side of the island and over to the west the sun was sunk low above Hoy. Certainly all that I could have asked for on my first night up here. I continued northwards until well after it was dark, bivvying down near to St. Margaret's Hope.

A suspicious farmer gave me more than a glance as the door alarm was ringing from one of the Comms buildings (I recognised it straight away but not my concern anymore! :D
