Super walk on a glorious day in sunshine with frost and snow on the ground. Beautiful views with Pendle Hill and Scridles trig point clearly visible. Just 3 miles from my door!

From gate to North followed ROW across a bog and up a small slope to Trig which is at the top of a muddy field srrounded by reeds and a moat, The Trig is in good condition with a plastic cap two sight holes are blocked , Full 360 views to 15mtrs-Mist and Rain, return via the bog

Reached this top by way of the bridleway from the north (Tinklers Lane) Very wet on the open fell . The pillar had it's own little moat round it ,complete with pond weed Too misty to see into Yorkshire , but cleared towards the north west (Saddle Hill etc) Can't think why this top is called Spion Kop - not steep, and didn't remind me of South Africa once

HISTORY: Pillar completed 28th April 1949 costing £21.5s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD96/T43 in 1951. Levelled for height in 1952. Last maintained by the OS in May 1976. SITE VISIT: Approached from north. Parked by south side of Tinklers Lane beside RoW at SD748528. Followed mapped RoW southwards to where routes cross, turning WSW to top. Pillar in good condition. Replacement plastic top cap fitted into spider by Jon Rouse, 20/02/2000. Flush bracket faces west, ~279°. Vented through east and south sight holes. Full 360° panoramic view includes Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent, Pendle Hill and Longridge Fell.

Revisit in the area to bag nearby Easington fell a Marilyn top,short but very boggy approach rock still on top as in last log, trig in vgc plastic plug complete with moat good views here today, nice to be out today its not throwing it down or shrouded in mist! P S: on checking old log the FB has been yellowed since last visit in late 2010.

Spion Kop is the name of a hill in South Africa where a battle was fought in 1900 during the Boer wars. Three different regiments from Lancashire took part. I suspect that someone local to this hill took part in the battle (and did not return?).

Easily accessible and very visible. I used the bridleway up from Tinkers Lane near Black Moss. A bit wet underfoot but then it is August!. Lovely vantage point with excellent views. Pillar in good condition but with plastic plug. WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?
