Visited on a circular walk from Blackgang Chine. On the Down, west of the trig point, is St. Catherine's Oratory. This is a medieval lighthouse built by Lord of Chale Walter de Godeton as an act of penance for plundering wine from the wreck of St. Marie of Bayonne in Chale Bay. It was completed in 1328. There was once an attached chapel, but it has been long since demolished. The lighthouse tower is known locally as the "Pepperpot". Nearby there are the footings of a replacement lighthouse (the "salt cellar") that was begun in 1785 but never completed. The salt cellar stands next to a radio mast. Superb views. Previously visited on the annual LUL old lags summer walking weekend on 13 June 2009.
