YSM325 Staddon Fort. Excellent old Fort. A pity the MOD have taken it over rather than make it a tourist attraction. Trig quickly spotted from the golf club. couldn't find a way to break in lol

Staddon Fort was the centrepiece of the 19thC Eastern defences commissioned by Lord Palmerston but it's not a listed building. The trig pillar is clearly visible from outside the fort, but on a Sunday afternoon there appeared to be no-one at home - the bell seemed to broken anyway. Had to be satis with a distant view.

After several weeks of phone calls and emails I eventually got a contact in the Navy MOD from whom to ask permission to visit. Thinking it was just a radio station and that access had been granted on spec i thought it would be just a formality and details of my extensive efforts could be logged to help others. Sadly not and previous access is being "investigated" - sorry - looks like security will be tightened up as a result. 5th May 2017 - revisit. Cars on site belong to golfers - rarely anyone on site. No luck so has to be logged as Seen Only

This was my second visit. The first time, a couple of years ago, the gates were open but there was no response to me ringing the bell so I went away. This time, in the pouring rain, the gates were closed and there was still no response to me ringing the bell. What I hadn’t realised on my last visit was that with a little judicious trespassing(?) the pillar was visible and an acceptable photo could be taken. So taking just my camera, I walked round the corner into the golf club. There were a couple of grounds men drinking tea in their shed who looked out of the window at me. They probably thought “Where the **** does he think he’s going?” but they weren’t bothered enough to come out in the rain to ask me! Having taken a photo, I walked back, still watched by the grounds men.

Struck lucky on my first visit. Gates were open and I wandered around until I found somebody carrying out maintenance work. He was more than happy to let me walk up to the trig. Last few yards are very steep grass - not suitable for work shoes! Fantastic views over Plymouth and harbour. Trig is in very good condition

I gave this one a high score for the good view from the golf club car park. If the TP could be reached, the view would be even better. The TP appears to be outside the modern fence of MoD property, but the ramparts and ditches of this 1860s fortification are just as effective.

TP6140 The FB appears to be on the left-hand side but I don't think it would be readable with binoculars because of the fall of the ground away from the car park.

Widgets 10/10/05 visit was a Monday; Dart More was there on a Thurs - may be a clue. Asbown scored tues but not mon. 15/7/10 I phoned someone at Arquiva who said there is often someone on site during the week so access shouldnt be a problem, but a pre-arranged visit would need Defence Estates permission (from Devonport base) and security clearance...

Located on the 'back' end of Staddon Fort (no surprises there then), via the golf course car park. Err, it look's ok and it's been painted white at some point in it's life ... I couldn't see any way of getting to it tho'. Dull car park (and possibly private), but great views from Jennycliff, and a top cafe too !
