A very easily reached trig - from the layby beside the sign for Sompting, it's byways and well-defined footpaths all the way to the top of the hill, where the pillar stands proud beside a track running through a ploughed field, and enjoys a spectacular view in all directions. Herd of bullocks appeared on the hillside on the way down; they were curious but no bother.

Number six of December trig challenge. Access from Sompting to Steyning Road. Turn right onto footpath half way up opposite car park, join South Downs Way and turn right heading south. Muddy through gate and steep climb. Great views. Have also accessed since from busticle Lane.

Pleasant walk up on a cold, bright afternoon from car park to NW. Crossed EON's 14km scar on the Southdowns connecting their Rampion off-shore wind farm to the Nat Grid at Bolney. This will hopefully grass over in time, but looks a bloody eye-sore at present. Signed FP closures have probably happened by now. Pillar located on RoW between arable fields. Original cap missing, asphalt replacement; all sight holes open; no depressions for top loops. Extensive Sussex downland views N, E & W; Worthing, Sompting, Lancing and English Channel to S.

Circular walk from Coombes down the R Adur, along the beach and up through Lancing. Misty but still 360 deg panoramic views - S Downs from Cissbury Ring to Truleigh Hill, plus river, Lancing College Chapel and the coast. Asphelt plug, all s/holes open, graffiti (now wearing away) and some chips from corners / top edges but otherwise vgc considering its public location.

I usd the parking area to the north-west and used bridle-ways and foot paths to easily reach the pillar. In good condition apart from a missing plug which has been replaced by a tramac type filling. A good viewpoint.

Parked at bottom od Dankton Lane and walked up, had to negotiate steep climb across field but easier ways are available, Trig is on the path of the Southdowns Way walk. Fantastic panoramic views all around the south from here, could see Beachy Head easily, yes this does feel like top of the world!

Since the photos were taken the area to the west of the trig has been cultivated. I was really taken with the views from here.Uninterrupted 360 degree panorama.Almost like being on top of the world.

First of four trig points visited today on 15 mile circular walk of area. Steep Down is apt name as mentioned before. Good condition with plug filled in. Great views to the West of Cissbury Ring Iron age Hill fort.

They wern't kidding when they named this place. It looks quite daunting from the nearby car park. However, it turned out to be a far easier walk than it appeared. The only downer was that it was slightly hazy, which spoilt some of the more distant views. Met a local who told me that on a clear day you can see the Isle of Wight and Chichester Cathederal. So I know what I missed! Also came across two riders going up the hill on horseback. Also visited nearby Beggars Bush cache.
