Day trip to the Steep Holm run by volunteers from the Kenneth Allsop Memorial Trust. Interesting Island with lots of remains of Victorian and WWII gun batteries and underground ammunition stores. The Barracks are now used as a cafe/souvenir shop to raise money to maintain the Island. The trigpoint is at the centre of the Island, accessed via different paths around the Island. Good 360 views but a lot of noisy seagulls flying around.

Seagull Guano convered, but delighted to be on Steep Holm at last... Fourth time lucky after three windy weather cancellations in 2018/19. Original shallow letter plug. Repainted it, but needn't have brought paint as the volunteer custodians could've provided it plus power washer. Though it looks like years since last paint they say it's not now much more than 2-3 years. Gulls will muck it up again pretty quickly.

Joined party of hardened geocachers for day trip from Penarth in the company of volunteers from the trust who own the island who joined us from Weston-super-mare. They opened up the visitor centre, did maintenance and provided refreshments. In the late breeding season the racket from the hundreds if not thousands of gulls living on the island was endless and the cocktail of unusual flowering flora, guano and decomposing carcasses of unfortunate birds provided a most unique aroma. Shadowing the geocachers as they searched out every cache on the island was most entertaining then settled down for some serious tea drinking and R and R for what is inevitably a long day. The return journey on a high speed rib via Weston with Weston to Penarth in 15 minutes at 38 knots was most exhilarating.

This has been my closest unvisited pillar to home for quite some time so it was good to get it crossed off the list. Took the RIB run by Bay Island Voyages from Cardiff for a 12 hour visit on the island. It seemed as if I had been up all morning when we arrived at the pillar at 9am. Some of the paths were feint as there haven't been visitors here since 2019. The trig however was still clear and easily found. Now what to do wit the other 10 hours on the island! Luckily enough it soon past exploring different things and in good company and reading about the island........ and eating cake.

I highly recommend the boat trip out to the island (run by the Kenneth Allsop Memorial Trust) - 12 hours is more than enough time to fully explore the island and visit the trigpoint at the top. Late August/September is the best time to visit because then the gulls won't be around to annoy you!

Luckily for me, my first attempt and weather OK for boat trip. However, it was a very LONG day - about 12 hours due to tides. Small shop/cafe/museum, archaeological dig site, war time buildings - all thoroughly explored within the hour! Best place to sit/read/meditate (?!) at landing side of island, the rest is totally covered with brambles - OK whilst sun is up. Very grateful for opportunity to visit via "public transport" but you have to be keen!

Interesting little island, with Victorian and WW2 defences. In care of Kenneth Allsop Trust, who do regular boat trips on the Bristol Queen, from Knightstone Harbour, Weston. WIth your own boat, technically it may be possible to stealth it by landing an the (virtual) South Landing, c50m W of Calf Rock. But the Trust usually have someone on the island, and anyway, why bother? Went across with my brother who lives locally - 3rd time lucky. Didnt book early enough last year, and our first 2008 attempt was weathered out. So this turned out to be my last surviving pillar in the Southwest. Got onto Calf Rock and Tower Rock too - neither are difficult. Trust staff recalled another trigger visiting this year: Norman Baxter she thought. Think I might have got carried away with the camera ...
