First of the 'Sapperton 4'. No OS sketch available for this one but I went in armed up with CJO's measurements and the usual tools - 30m tape, spade, tent peg and bbq spit (for prodding the ground). All unnecessary as it was found in short(ish) grass and exposed! A far easier bag than expected.

Also visited nearby FBM and Trig Pillar. Earlier excavations still make this relatively easy to find particularly at this time of year before the grass really starts to grow.

My first of these. Easily found on E side of crossroads with help of previous photographs. Managed to tread on it while lining myself up looking at the TP:UK photos on my iPhone! Slightly hidden by long grass which I pushed back for the purposes of viewing & photographing. Position logged from GPS device accurate to ±5m. TP7202 Sapperton (R) and TP5816 Sapperton both within easy reach of here. NB: This Berntsen no longer appears on the OS Passive Station search, but is there if you use the record number H1SO9402.

The berntsen is sited in long grass on the verge of the crossroads of two minor roads. It was not found at first so I wandered down the road to the nearby FBM. On my return it was easily spotted and was clear of grass; I don’t know how I missed it earlier. All that can be seen are the adjacent roads and some nearby fields.

Parked near to this, and walked to the FBM. Came back and looked for thi one for 5 minutes, with no luck. Had a cup of tea, and decided to give it another go. Success! Well covered by long grass. Position is between the fence corner and the corner of the sand/grit box, closest to the fence, about 3 feet into the uncut grass.

Didn't have the OS sketch for this one, only the grid reference. Bit of a shot in the dark this one, sadly I missed.

The OS station number above is incorrect for this Berntsen. It should be H1SO9402 - the near-by FBM is in a different grid square. Armed with the OS sketch, a tape measure and a trowel I found it reasonably easily - it was buried beneath long dead grass. I left it clear.

Despite having access to large scale mapping, the grid ref plots out about 4m away from the fence corner on the cormer with the sand "bucket", I too drew a blank.

The OS link wasn't working so I didn't hold out much hope of finding this so I wasn't disappointed! Spent 10 minutes combing the grass verges on the crossroads but no sign of it at all. Need a pinpoint on the location to have any chance.
