A quick revisit for me, and pillar #67 for my little helper. We were on a walk from Kettlesing Bottom, came up the ROW that runs by the Menwith fence and then along Menwith Hill Road. The pillar is clearly visible over the low wall, and is only a short distance from either of two gates. There were cattle in the field, but at the far end away from the pillar, so we nipped over. Trig in excellent condition with a full set of metalwork. No bother from Plod this time, probably because we were on foot.

(1587) Parked on Menwith Hill Road at the houses, and asked about visiting the pillar. They wasn't the landowners, but said a quick visit wouldn't be a problem. I was also pre-warned that the police from the adjacent RAF base patrol the area, and may well stop to enquire who I was, and what it was I was up to. Pillar very visible from the road, and access into the field is just the matter of climbing over a gate. All in good condition. After bagging this one, along with nearby TP17469, I was indeed stopped and questioned by the police. Once my details had been checked and verified, and I had explained why I was in the area - and the officer seemed quite interested in what I told him about the two trigs and their use by the OS - things got more relaxed. And with that I was on my merry way. Pillar history: Built on the 4th of April 1955, at a cost of £15 13s 6d. Last maintained by the OS in September of 1986.

Visited whilst walking a 9-miler from Kettlesing Bottom to Darley and back. The major interest here obviously comes from the close proximity to Menwith Hill Base, and the thrill/worry of being 'off-path' in that area. On my visit, I had no such problems. The footpath that borders the boundary fence was well-mown, and all the heavy security was interesting - I strongly suspect that I was being watched from a stationary vehicle as I crossed the main road, but I wasn't approached as I quickly hopped over the wall and walked up to the trig. It is sat in a field, amongst a small pile of stones and nettles, and is in perfectly perfunctory condition. The base looks to be a little exposed, but otherwise no issues. Good views and the extra dramatic tension from the local geography give this a bit of a boost!

Very close to Menwith Hill listeneing station but far enough away for it not to be a problem if you know what I mean. Just off the road in a field (gate handy). Plug with raised lettering.

In a field near the road that runs past the slightly controversial US/NATO listening post on Menwith Hill. Not much to reccomend this trig point except for the nearby large 'golf balls', which are worth a look.
