My second visit, as before from the hairpin bend and followed the zig-zagging tracks to gain height then due W along a path to the pillar. My first visit was in a total white-out, so no chance to appreciate the views; tonight I arrived at the pillar to find a father & son setting up camp at the pillar, and half way through cooking up supper! They were gracious enough to take a photo of me & the dog, but I didn't want to linger, so another visit on another occasion required. Hopefully next time I visit the pillar will have been recoated white, the orange stuff applied since my first visit has partially disappeared, leaving the pillar looking like it was designed by Jackson Pollock...

We set off from the track by the Harehope Burn at point 256 in sub-freezing temperature and falling snow. We'd expected this trip to be either 'Winter Wonderland' or a white out, and although we got the latter, there is however something immensely satisfying about successfully navigating a hill in very poor visibility. Given we got no views difficult to score this hill but for the fun it provided in the snow it gets an 8, and a probable revisit in the future!

From the minor road to the north along the bridleway. Lots of activity and road closures due to the Tour of the Reservoir cycle race. The pillar was possibly painted day-glow orange at one time by an over-enthusiastic surveyor to improve visibility. I once working with a surveyor who got into a lot of bother by doing the same thing to some pillars in Cornwall whilst working on the A30 / A38 improvements. The normal procedure was to hang a brightly coloured flag around the pillar.
