Verge parking E side Viking Way (SK 9280 4474). RoW goes most of the way to the trig, then a 200m section of farm track. Pillar sits at a junction of field boundaries away from the hedgerow. An original centre cap is retained, indented lettering; all sight holes open. Extensive flat farmland views.

(1133) I also enjoyed reading Lathama's log. Always on my 'to do' list, but happy when this one came around for a visit. Initially tried to get parking on Hough Road, but verges too boggy. Settled for parking up inside Gelston, which wasn't easy. Any spaces there was very much at a premium. Nice enough walk down the PRoW. Deviated from that and followed the last field boundary down to the pillar. All good. Pillar history: Built on the 31st of May 1938, at a cost of 5 5s 7d. Last maintained by the OS in October of 1980.

Lathama's story was enchanting! I parked opposite the entrance road to Carlton Ashes Farm, although in hindsight I could have driven almost all the way as there seemed to be no-one about at Appletree Farm further up the lane. Past Appletree Farm the track comes to an end on a concrete yard from where I walked straight ahead into the right-hand field and continued west along the field edge. At the far corner of the field the trig stands on a slightly raised margin, A good deal of tramping down of grass was necessary to see the pillar properly! There are good views down off the hill and there is a wind turbine a few hundred metres to the south (from other logs apparently quite recently installed). Pillar in good condition; original cap with shallow indented letters; FB faces E; E sighthole plugged, all others open. 2.1km round trip from road.

I walked from Gelston, following the PROW until the last field, but instead of going diagonally across it, the field boundary leads to the pillar. Almost swallowed by the tall weeds until I did some trampling to reveal the flush bracket. Good views.

Had a stroll along the lane and met a lovely family who lived in one of the houses there. The two young children declared that the pillar was 'the centre of their universe' and that they met there every day! How delightful! They had recently moved here from Brentford in London and were still getting used to the wide open spaces. I explained to them how the pillar was used and the children assured me that they were going to 'map the whole world' from there! The pillar is all intact - original plug with slightly-indented letters. No paint. N sighthole open, others closed. Lovely views all round from here. No wonder they find this place so magical. A really lovely experience!
