What a nightmare. Went through a gap and into the plantation section but couldn't find the pillar. Returned to the road and eventually located the pillar protected by some impenetrable shrubs and briar roses. Noted damage to pillar. I don't normally give up on pillars, but this one can go fly. Views from none really.

(548) This one was easier to bag than I thought it would be. The Pillar is visible - just - from the road, and the hedge itself has a few gaps nearby, and elsewhere, so access was relatively straight forward. Also the time of year helps, with everything being cut back or not yet in full bloom. The pillar itself has some damage to its right hand side. Running from the top to about half way down. Pillar history: Built on the 16th of October 1948, at a cost of 8 12s 2d. Last maintained by the OS in October of 1980.

But then still had difficulty locating the actual pillar which has become engulfed in the hedge. Pillar is slightly damaged but should now last as long as the hedge does. Very much an enclosed area.

It is so integrated into the hedge that you would walk passed it a hundred times! The ivy was so think that I had trouble removing it. I think the central plug is missing but I'm not sure. The flush bracket faced away from the road [how strange!] so I had to risk arrest and nip over the hedge into the MOD area to remove yet more ivy and find it! I feel quite proud of this one.
