Pulled over at entrance to footpath for Wytham Woods, about a mile south east of Eynsham. Sign by gate said footpath closed, gate was also locked so drove back south (the direction I had come from) for about a quarter of a mile to a muddy lay-by on the east of the road beside a gate at a boundary between an open field and some woods. The pillar is painted white and is visible from the road on top of the high ground. However, not straightforward to get to. Over gate and north east across field , probably sheep pasture, and uphill. In plain view from the road. As direct a line as possible to TP leads into another field (under barbed wire fence) which has lots of hawthorn bushes. Finding a route through the bushes, still heading uphill over uneven ground (land slips?) then reaching a dense thicket of brambles along the base of the hill. Impenetrable, turned north towards a gate into the next field on the right of which was a way through to the east. Then, beyond the brambles, turned south, clambering up steep bank, to top a few meters from the pillar. Good spot. Wonderful views to west over the River Thames. Spider and cap in place. To east of TP is some sort of enclosure, reservoir maybe.

I obtained a free pass for and walked through Wytham Woods to Swinford Gate. Once through the gate it was a short but steep walk to the top of the hill. It's very easy to find yourself on the wrong side of a fence at this point but they are low and easy to stride over. The pillar looks good painted white and it retains the original spider. It affords good views towards the River Thames and beyond.

Used Nekyram's route, which seems the easiest way to approach this trig. Wasn't that easy, though - uphill trudge on uneven ground, and wet underfoot as it rained the day before. Had a few attempts to find the route to the reservoir railings, too, and on finding it, struggled to stay upright because it was *very* muddy. Nevertheless, once I'd scrambled up the incline to the railings and made it to the pillar, there was a great view to be enjoyed. Some effort required, but worth it. Cows stayed at bottom of hill on my visit (but there is plenty of evidence that suggests they often wander up to the reservoir!)

Walked through to this from Wytham woods (Permit only). The woodland is owned by Oxford University and a free permit can be obtained by applying on-line and is a lovely area , well worth a walk round. An exit gate on the Swinford edge of the wood give access to the trig point near edge of the reservoir.

Went up dirt driveway with "No Cycling" and "Access by permission only" signs on it. Well there is an open gate there?! After going past very dilapidated barn I parked the bike and walk through fields to reservoir fence and followed it to the pillar. Not bad views from it.

Parked at small dirt layby on Oxford Rd (SP 44410 07737). Over field gate, then rough pasture - long wet grass, no sign of cattle (other than lots of pooh). Covered reservoir expansion now complete and fortunately hasn't encroached onto the pillar's space. Original cap in place, deeply indented lettering; all sight holes open. 360deg panorama - Wytham Woods, Thames, Farmoor Reservoir.

Made a diversion for this one from a long distance stroll along the Thames Path. I was fascinated by the toll history of the nearby Swinford Bridge: 'only' 5p a car to cross it, but as many thousands of vehicles use this bridge annually, that's a significant income (about £4million) for the anonymous owner who bought it for £1,080,000.00 in December 2009. The tolls are set by Parliament. A beautiful bridge too, built in 1769 of a golden colour, with voussoirs and balustrade.

My rules allow me to log a trig if I am on the nearest ROW - in this case on the Thames Path looking up at this one. However, worthy of logging as we saw no other trigs on the whole of the 184 miles of the TP - I guess this is what you should expect if you choose to walk down a river valley!
