This pillar is actually on the Oldham Way in a little gem of a country park (approached on foot from Heald's Green). In the period leading up to the Peterloo Massacre it was said that the hill had been used by radicals for practising marching and drilling (us????). The beech woodland was planted to prevent this happening again and the hill became a hunting park and private game reserve. Later a Royton councillor (Norris Bradbury) gifted the park to the people of Royton. A war memorial obelisk is next to the pillar. Tandle must be gifted to alternative Friday nights, I spent my first night out in nearly 10 months "cruising" the streets of Greater Manchester on the 408, 409 and 237.

Tandle Hill Country Park was a spot with a great view of Manchester, Rochdale and the nearby moors with wind farms standing out in white against glowering grey cloud on the horizon while above us early morning sunshine glinted off the frost covered ground. Plenty of dog walkers and the café opened promptly at 9 for refreshments (hot and cold), but still plenty of peace and quiet among the trees. Good bird life and spent 5 minutes watching a treecreeper picking its way around tree trunks before being disturbed by one of many foraging squirrels. Summit capped by various paraphernalia including a war monument; toposcope, benches, a stone commemorating Peterloo along with the trig.

Looked out at this hill when travelling from Yorkshire for years - at last a visit. Beautiful country park and manage to get a few minutes on this deservedly popular hill to ourselves. Lovely views of Blackstone Edge, West Pennine, the many little hills of the lower Pennine and the city in a cloudburst. Beech woods beautiful-planted to stop gatherings of protestors after the shameful episode of Peterloo.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 22nd April 1940 costing £4.7s.3d. Computed as secondary triangulation station SD80/34 within the Manchester block during 1945. Levelled for height to Class 1 precision at tertiary standards in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in February 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from east. Ample free public parking at the west end of Tandle Hill Road. Followed mapped footpath network through the country park to the top. Using a GPS will speed up finding the correct location through the woods. Pillar located just outside the woods, beside monument. Column in good condition. Spider centre open, centre tube filled with debris. Flush bracket faces southeast, compass measurement 127°. Vented through three sight holes, port on FB face still plugged, innard blocked with debris. 270° panoramic view spanning clockwise from SSE through south west and north to ENE. Part of a 24 trig stint around the northern outskirts of Manchester.

Holiday Friday, decided to give my new trigmobile Astra a run over the Pennines on a sunny day. Easy to find country park in Royton. Today it was very popular, although a lovely spot I had to share the trig with many others. Located through the woods from the car park near to a war memorial. Missing plug filled with litter, but no graffiti and good views of the Pennines, Manchester and the mountains of N Wales if clear. Shame about that huge wind farm, maybe that could be used to power my scalextric while ruining the view. Will look for this point when hopefully on the Pennine Way this summer from Blackstone Edge.

I parked at Tandle Hill Country Park Visitor’s Centre and walked through the park to get to this. A great place. Crowded today by the centre, but once into the woods it was lovely. You step walk out of the woods to meet the war memorial, toposcope and trig and a great view round 270 degrees. A day with 4 really good easy trigs today. Wonderful!

Hey. This is inbetween Oldham and Rochdale. Pierced by motorways. And lovely! Made a day of it by starting west of the 627 and threaded across. Ok - a brief spell of reality when we met the meat packers having a smoke break, but once we gave up on the path AROUND the fishing ponds and went amongst them... (Strange hobby!) And we saw a fish!! OK, perhaps not that unusual, but it was a big 'un. Then a ... can't avaoid it ... enchanting wood before emerging at the summit to a great view. (Yes I LIKE Manchester. And Jodrell Bank.) Continue down and you find ... The Tandle Hill Tavern!!!! OMG. This journey has a whole new meaning.

No plug. Public. Tandle Hill Country Park. From Slattocks, take Thornham Lane; go right at Tandle Hill Tavern & gate gives access to hill. Then short walk up to summit with trig, viewpoint & obelisk [war memorial].

Parked in the car park and walked up to this trig and the monument. Also bagged the two nearby caches. Quite a spectacular location with the nearby monument - on slightly higher ground? Everything in good order except that the plug is missing. Now continuing my walk to Hey Farm, Crow Knowl and Birshaw if I can find my way.

Excellent views, including across the city. Dog went for me on the way up, so I kicked it. It will think twice next time. Got the usual, - He does not normally do that. - from the owner. The truth is that all dogs hate me - they smell the fear as soon as they see me.

Plug missing; two sighting-holes open. No graffiti (would have expected it). Murky day - not what the weather forecast stated. Good local views then motorway and Manchester.

Good views over Oldham and can even see Manchester and fearther. There is geo-cache down the hill to the South in a bush on the right if anyone is interested in that.

Extensive views across Greater Manchester to the West. The country park has some lovely woodland, I visited today with my family and dog. I can't say I've ever seen a pebbledashed trig before. The nearby War Memorial remembers the men of Royton.
