I visited at the weekend whilst on a walk in the area couldn't find any loose slats as outlined in the previous logs. I spent quite a whilst bashing undergrowth looking for a gap but couldn't see anything other than one possibility but I'd kept my partner waiting too long and whilst she likes trigs, she was never going to get in the way I'd seen and I wasn't willing to make her wait. I returned today and climbed in from the bridge on the old road where there was a narrow gap where part of the fence is damaged. The gap is on a steep slope and required climbing over the bridge rail, getting over a steep gap and a sea of brambles and through the gap in the fence. It is not easy, and then getting up through the undergrowth from that entry point to the trig is very spikey, overgrown and unpleasant (twice as far in the thicket than the old way in). I was determined and made it ok to the trig and back out again but be warned, it's much more difficult than before and harder getting out of the fence than getting in (as you are going uphill getting out!).

Parked on Grange Lane, followed previous logs and found loose slat in far right hand corner after going up banking. Just as I was going through it I was spotted by a guy in a lorry. He explained that he was welding up the slat in the next 20 minutes, so was a quick dash in and out. Enjoyed battling through the trees.

My car was in for service in the Meadowhall area so I used the time to walk to this pillar. Once at the bollards I followed Vaanburens instructions and found them very useful. I would add the following though - once at the Black and yellow bollards take any route up the bank on the left that suits you. Once at the top the pallets are in the top right corner with the fence on the right separating you from the pillar. There is more than one damaged slat in the fence - I squeezed through one but got back through another. I wouldn't tackle the next section without GPS - it's just to overgrown making it impossible to get any useful clues. As you get through one overgrown area follow the path to the next. The area is getting quite dense with thorns and going in winter is not likely to make a difference. You can't see the pillar until you're almost on top of it and there is no longer any view, just dense overgrowth. The pillar is in good condition and retains the original centre for the spider. There's nothing good to look at but I did enjoy the challenge and that's why I've given it high mark.

Followed previous instructions, except we accessed the scrap land via a gap by the main gate. After crossing the scrap land, we found the gap, but the gap is no longer there, but one of the fence verticals has been repaired with cable ties, so I assume that is where the gap was. Luckily I had my biking backpack with me that always has some emergency cable ties in it, so I was able to break those in situe, access the gap to get to the trig, then re-cable tie on the way out. The brambles etc arent as bad as the previous write ups, we were all in shorts and T-shirts and we were fine, although we did wear wellies for protection. Trig is pretty hard to find, despite having electronic mapping on the phone as bushes are quite well grown, so visibility is poor and routes have to be negotiated around bushes. This all resulted in it feeling a bit naughty tramping around looking for a secret long lost trig. Kids loved it, but the missus was not impressed. Best to bag this one sooner rather than later, because if the scrap land is ever used again as a yard or something, it will be extremely difficult to access this one . Itchy.

(1570) Grange Lane near to the golf course for parking. Then it was simply a matter of following the route as outlined by vanburen. The first part - getting to the fence with the gap - was easy as pie. But the second leg is another matter entirely. Hawthorn and trees laden with low lying branches forming near solid walls at times that needed to be battled through. Pillar soon found thankfully, and all in very good condition. Getting back out wasn't nearly as difficult, though I did pick up some more 'wounds' for my troubles. But nice to have ticked this one off the list. Pillar history: Built on the 19th of July 1947, at a cost of £6 2s 9d. Last maintained by the OS in July of 1985.

Been looking forward to this mini adventure. Its a great little explore. Park at the substation on Grange Lane and walk over the yellow bridge then after about 30metres go right up the small bank thru the trees, once on the scrubland head to the wooden pallets and to the metal fence and follow that left to a wide gap to go thru. Once in the mass of every prickly bush known to man you should easily find the pillar if you have the technology on your phone. I don't have a decent phone so battled thru the bushes for a good 30mins before spotting it. I was very happy. Wear a coat and hat not a fleece or it could get ruined. Hope these pics help. Good luck !

To be honest I'd pretty much given up any realistic hope of ever bagging this one given its location. However, quite by chance I happened to notice a couple of recent, successful logs on here and therefore decided to try my own luck. So, from the A6178 Sheffield Rd I took the now closed Grange Ln down the side of Tata Steel's Rotherham site. After crossing the yellow railed footbridge you need to continue south on Grange Ln for another 30metres or so before climbing the bank on your right (plenty of obvious trods). Now head west across the scrub towards the container depot. As you approach the container depot you will encounter plenty of wooden pallets and plastic sheeting on the ground - this is where you then need to make for the boundary fence of Tata Steel's Rotherham site where you will find two loose slats in the fence at SK 41147 91190. Having negotiated the fence your final challenge is to continue heading west whilst bashing your way through the hawthorn until the pillar finally comes into view. Winter months are definitely the time to visit this one !! For the first time ever I cheated and used my GPS to guide me in. In good condition with metal cap. FB faces NE. No views due to the saplings but I doubt they'd be particularly attractive anyway !! Retraced my steps but exited via the single gap in the fence (mentioned by Borderer) without any difficulty even though I'm not quite as slim as I used to be.

Unfortunately I didn't refer to this site before attempting this one but by chance had some success. Parked on the closed road to the east (now a path) and over the bridge. Following the Palisade fencing to the west I found a gap in the fence just short of the container depot. Try as I might I couldn't squeeze through and gave up, fortunately on the way back to the car I spied a second gap with two loose staves which I got through quite easily. After a struggle through the tree plantation containing lots of Hawthorn managed to locate the pillar which was in a good condition. I guess that this will become more difficult as the plantation matures.

Having stayed last night at Hathersage, cycled through Sheffield, the obvious onward route to Rotherham and Doncaster passed Templeborough and I thought I could afford the time to have look and was equipped with a map print. Turned off A6178 on to lane signed "closed to through traffic 2007" opposite Parcelforce depot. Crossed yellow railed bridge and tracked perimeter fence to right. Access gained and ducked under and pushed aside lower twigs and branches of trees and a few minutes searching brought success. Various debris made outside fence hazardous while inside was a safer "normal" wood search!

The log from my first visit on 10th March was as follows - I was passing on the M1 so I thought I’d take a look – surely it couldn’t be that difficult – I’ve jumped plenty of barbed wire and trampled on lots of private land. I walked up the path to the west – the site is surrounded by an inner steel fence and an outer wire fence with barbed wire both nine feet high – in between is a cleared track with a power distribution system. The perimeter is watched by cctv masts, floodlights and danger 33000 volt signs. It would be easier to break into Fort Knox. I left in awe of the trigpointing masters and determined to improve my fence jumping skills. I had success on my second visit 18th March after guidance from the masters. It’s a tight squeeze with lots of thorns and saplings to negotiate. Since this was a particularly challenging trigpoint I will celebrate by including a photo of my special birthday cake from the previous day.
