From Cosham stn, underpass at very large junction, over footbridge at Portsbridge roundabout, past Shell stn, take road to right signed the playing fields of Portsmouth Grammar Sch. Past a large brick building, possibly a garage, right at the back of this building then up the steps to the left follow the path beside a green wire mesh fence. Unfortunately there are no holes in the fence, but the FB is easily readable.

Plenty of parking at the Lido. Over the footbridge then up onto the ramparts. There are steps about 200 metres to the west or scramble straight up worn path. Annoyingly behind a fence. Looks as if several repairs have been made to the fence. Tempted to scale the fence but interrupted by a dog and its owner. For now have settled for log from a meter away. Wondered if access could be easier and more rewarding from the playing field on the south side of the fence. Might try next time as doesn’t feel properly logged and couldn’t read FB number correctly.

Currently a goodly sized hole in the wire netting, so able to establish trig in vgc with metal cap with deep letters still in place, although all s/holes are buried. No views to speak of.

Pillar is located a few meters along the path, just on the wrong side of the fence, however, there is a hole right next to it, so getting direct touching access no problem today. Good condition no views as in the hedge.

Parked in Portsmouth Grammar School car park and walked in, past the impressive and new-looking Fawcett Pavillion building, up the steps to top of the old fortifications (the bastion), only to determine pillar wasn't accessible from here. Went round to the footpath to the N, only to see the pillar through the chain-link fence! How frustrating. Returned to the school playing fields, spoke with the groundsman who was happy for me to re-access the bastion where I finally found it. My luck was that there were no children on the sportsfield today and the groundsman wasn't upset that I didn't ask the first time. Pillar found overgrown with scrubby elder, bramble & ivy, access awkward requiring a short scramble up a steep bank. Original cap in place, deeply indented lettering; LHD side sight hole open. No views.
