Walked up from Black Middens car park and more or less followed the previous loggers path. The "new" fence must be at least 5 years old and although not as rough as some have suggested it is not a walk in the park. No views at the top but it's another Northumberland trig ticked off.

Having read all the previous logs (several times) I'd decided to leave myself a full day to do this one as I don't have GPS and it was obviously going to be a proper challenge. So it is with a slight sense of disappointment to report this was among the more straight forward TP's I've bagged! Accidently-on-purpose missed the FC sign by the bridge at Waterhead over the Tarset Burn that says "No Unauthorised Vehicles" and drove up past Highfield Farm and up to Highfield Hope, cutting out at least 30 minutes of forest track trudge, and parked at the junction with a short dead end track that heads off NNE. The forest has been cleared back all the way up to the 300m contour, and well cleared too - no piles of brash or uprooted stumps to fight through, just followed a new looking wire fence N then NNW to where it turns back SW, walked W about 100m then NNW straight up the very visible and clear firebreak directly to the TP at the top. On the return journey there are decent views S and SE down the firebreak, still no views from the TP itself. The Dodd was, ahem, a doodle!

From Black Middens car park. Took sheepsocks' advice and followed the boggy ride from SSE both in and out. Not an easy route by any means but probably the least worst option. No view from pillar. Score reflects effort required.

Bagged as YSM026 The Dodd. This is a toughie. Good forest tracks to within 1km and then you're on your own, we found a few tracks and firebreaks but ended up through 500m of dense conifer with lots of deep mud and water filled holes, seemed to take an age to get to the trigpoint and I gave it a big hug 🤗 - I was sooooo happy to see it! Probably one of the hardest YOSMs so far, apart from the Ben of course!

Walked the 5km from Black Middens (such an attractive name!) carpark at 772899 using caroleengel's route. It was too wet to use the drainage ditch so we just did the last bit by compass/GPS pushing through interlocking small wet spikey conifers. Saturated tussocky bog underfoot. Returned via the wet tussocky ride running SSE from the trig, and followed the deer fence at the bottom eastwards to hit the track at 740913. This was quicker than the ascent route and avoided another battle with almost impenetrable conifers. A trig only for obsessives and completists. No worthwhile views en route or at trig, unless you enjoy 10km of conifer appreciation.

Followed route used by caroleangel. Cycled to end of track and then along the drainage ditch be prepared to get wet feet. The last 30m was through very thick small trees but came out on the ride close to the trig point. Not much of a view apart from in direction of ride

From BW to SE. From end of mapped track at NY731923, half right (NE) over open area of tussocks to wooden structure at NY 7315 9234. Thru' trees short distance to pick up drainage channel at NY 7317 9234. Follow, forking left at NY 7347 9252, to battle final few meters thru' trees. MUCH easier than the tussocky ride. Drainage channel shows up well on Google earth

Visited as part of completing various geocache grids, and all four of the Obsessive Cacher Challenge series, in one long day. Cycled as far as I could, then rough going up firebreaks and over brash.

Took the track by bike to near the Trigpoint then tried bashing through the woods - if anybody follows - do not go this way! I would advise sticking to the firebreaks.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 6th December 1954 costing 18.11.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NT72/T99 during 1957. Levelled for height to Class 2 precision in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in August 1978. SITE VISIT: Approached from southeast. Mapped parking at Black Middens. Followed road then public bridleway towards Highfield. Then tried to follow forest breaks as shown on 1:25K, challenging terrain, accidently took an extra long route to trig resulting in a roasting from my companion. The old fence to the SW of the trig is now wireless. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented lettering. Flush bracket faces SSE, compass measurement 165. Vented through west sight hole. No view.
